Where has all the good ammo gone?

Its a crying shame. . . I remember when 8mm was .08 cents a round. Now its what 30 cents?
Someone is making a profit. I suspect there is tons of it sitting in German, Romania, and Serbia.

like everything else, people started to get worried and stocked up . panic buying cleaned out the existing supplies.

I also read that some yugo that was going to be shipped here was scraped for copper content instead. I would think that there is a lot less paperwork in recycling the copper.

Aim just listed 80's steel case Romanian for about 20c per round last Friday. Seems to be about the only source for relatively cheap ammo these days. We'll see how long it lasts.

Back in 1984 I had a major importer tell me that there were 100,000,000 rounds of 8mm in a cave in Europe. This guy was not prone to BS and always produced what he said he would, so I do believe what he was telling me. Price was .0025 cent a round, but you had to buy it all. That is 250,000.00. No one wanted it at that time. (Portugese 8mm was .04 cents a round wholesale). I don't know what ever happened to it. Hard to believe someone would turn it down today.

I would imagine that it has been sold by now,or used in one of their little wars,it wouldn't go far that way.Meanwhile,I know of a small gunstore that has a tin of 8mm for $75,I think I will get it! :D ---bil

I can help you understand the rising price of everything that is being imported.
The "dollar" has been in steady decline for some time, while the "euro" continues to rise. Some overseas outfits now state that payment be made in Euro's, not dollars!
There is also the matter of the importer paying for port security here in the USA and more recently paying US inspectors in European ports. That latest charge is doubling the cost of container inspections. It also doubles the chance that your shipment will be held up for one thing or another.
Lots of shipping companies won't handle surplus/ammunition/firearms shipments as any "problem" usually ends in "seizure". They don't want to pay for the delay of legitimate goods that were in the shipment with the "seized" goods. That fact has led importers to leasing entire vessels to get the goods across the water.

Nothing about the industry is getting cheaper or easier.

I have been looking myself Chris. I will send you something if I find a good source.

I was thinking about trying cast bullets once I get going. Or do you think that it would lead to much or I wonder if there would be any other problems???

I've been using Remington 8mm bullets. How they would feed in an SA42 I don't know. But they shoot wonderful good in both my Yugo M48 and K98. I guess if you cast your bullets from a hard enough alloy they would feed ok. One way to harden them is to drop them into water as they drop from the mold. I don't know if Prvi Partiazan makes 8mm bullets. I've been using their .311 dia. in my PSL and they are accurate. Surplus bullets seemed to have dried up along with the ammo.

I just went straight to their site when I read this, and I can't find a sign of it. Do they still have this? :(

And on that note, what about good sources for 8mm Boxer brass?

The only manufacture I can find that makes 8mm FMJ bullets is S & B, they list it on their europe web site. But I have not found a USA source for them.

http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/ammo-compo ... ullets.php

ps, I have emailed the USA contacts for a source. I will let you know the response, and perhaps we could get a group buy going if I find any components.

I finally received a response to my inquiry on 8mm FMJ components from S&B

Doesn't look good.

From S&B....
"After receiving similar comments from people like you. We tried to import components several years ago. We were extremely unsuccessful. The biggest problem is our component pricing from the factory is much more expensive than our loaded round. We do not intend to try and import components anytime in the near future. With the weak dollar, the pricing would be completely out of line."

Thanks for the inquiry
