MG42 Madness

Post by msg1956 »

Hello All

OK you guys, I discovered this site at the end of last year, but since I don't know how to weld, and there was no "approved" MG42 semi, I just kinda lurked. Well because of this site, I was "forced" to jump into the SA42 ring.

In the last month I was "pressured" into buying a Dan 3 cut receiver, "coerced" into buying a 308 and 8mm parts kit, "pressured" into buying 4 extra barrels, and "hoodwinked" into spending money on a 308 belt loader.

I suppose you guys won't be satisfied until I buy a pile of MG42 belts, a tripod, sling, Pirate's conversion parts, and God knows what else! Damn you, Damn you all to H***!

But really, thanks for all the info here. The whole purpose of the internet is for people from all over to exchange information, and this site is great!

I have my Unitstrut to make a jig, and have cleaned up my receiver pieces, but I still don't know how to weld!

Thanks again for the site, and being a great bunch of guys.

Jim

I too have been harrased into buying all the same stuff too. I started 2 weeks agao.. I know hove 3 cut recievers/ kits waiting to be made.

This is the best conversion site on the net. All the other conversion sites (1919, bren etce) need to look at this site and taylor themselves after it. It is so user friendly.. I wll tell you the best part is the chat section. It is nice to jump in to chat ask a question and go build on your gun...

anyways, i love this place :rave:

Jim,

You didn't mention MG3 fed trays, topcovers, and those nifty HK fifty round drums!

Ohh Ohh and manuals. Lots of manuals. Manuals that show all the parts and how they go together. Manuals that show how the gun works. Manuals that tell how to properly shoot and care for the MG42. Manuals for the MG34, manuals for guns you don't even have. Yes Yes. uh-huh. uh-huh.

You Guys are killing me!

I have just spent the last year selling blood and organs to build 3 semi Brownings (1919A4, 1928, and 1917A1), along with getting most of the accessories that are still available. For the love of sweet baby Jesus, I have almost 3 grand in Browning tripods!

Now I have to go down that dark path again with this German bullet hose!

Before I go much further, I really have to get this damned receiver together. Then the priority will be belts and a tripod. Even though this is a WW2 receiver, everything else is post war or Yugo, so I think I will take the easy way out and get an MG3 tripod.

The rest of the add-ons will come with time.

Oh my aching wallet!

Heh, heh. You've been infected with the MG-42 virus. There is no cure. You will be compelled to buy MG-42 parts until your basement looks like Dan's place. Stacked from floor to ceiling with parts. MG belts stuffed into closets. Ammo squirreled away in corners all over your house. The guy at the welding supply house sends you Christmas cards thanking you for your business. The UPS guy hates you because of the heavy boxes he has to deliver to your house. He hopes you move to another state. Yeah, this is only the beginning.

And don't forget the ammo and the ammo or the ammo.

The Money Pit

msg1956,

All our toys are Money Pits, but the good part is they are a commodity for the future. You should not lose money on the them. I bought my MG42 from BRP and paid just under $3K and now they are selling for $5K; not a bad investment to get 40% profit huh?

One work I have for you is to get John Baum's Manuals! These will save you a lot of questions on the MG42 and they are great fun to read anytime. I have been buying John's Manuals since he first stareted his translations and they have answered most of my questions about operation, care and feeding! The few dollars you spend on them will save you a lot of "hair pulling" in the future.

Guns don't lose value like cars. Expecialy guns from WW2 where there are none made anymore.
