BATF Question

Post by Gungrubber »

Ok I am new at this building from a part's kit thing.
I have a few questions regarding the right way to go about it.
1 do you have to inform the BATF of your build in any way like sending in a letter telling them what you plan to do? Or just make sure your build conforms to BATF regs. so if they come around your good and legal like.

I have an m-53 part's kit on the way. and an 80% receiver.

I don't want to run afoul of the federal goons by doing something wrong.

welcome :)

to build the kit into a semi ??
1.you will need to weld into the rece bottom a stud that will prevent the insertion of a f/a bolt
2. you will need to grind the sear lugs off of the bolt
3. you will need to machine material from the bottom of the rece to prevent the insertion of a fa grip stick

gungrubber it is important --the sequence that you modify the rece---i think (and others may chime in) you need to make the modification listed above before you go any further--- the way i see it --- if you assemble the firearm and then make the modifcation's you will not be legal---ya need to make the mods before you assemble the firearm---
good luck
let us know how you are doing -post pict

thanks waffendude

I was pretty sure on sequence of build and that the receiver had to be semi modified
before anything else.

Now as long as I follow the build sequence I am ok ?
I don't have to get approval from the batf before building ?

1) YES
2) As long as your not doing it as a business, If its done for yourself as a hobby you do not need permission from anyone other than the wife  .
For your own protection you need to know WHAT can be built legally or follow established build procedure.

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of
over-age juvenile delinquents running the place.
