MG 34 tripod part

Does somebody have an idea what's the use of the horizontal metal bar (about 3" in lenght and 1/2" wide, about 8" from the rear) located on the right of top frame and soldered to it? Seems like it is built to hold something but what? TIA

I believe you're talking about the access slot to get to the internal trigger assembly. I haven't seen one soldered in place. I had one off and it slid out with very slight bending of the tab. There is a pair of spring-loaded small levers in there that enable the trigger to remain pulled while the gun carriage recoils.

I know the part that you're talking about. I, too, always assumed that it was a slide to take some sort of instrument with a base like the optic sight until I was corrected by an armourer. It's as JB describes it.
