MG34 Lafette Restoration **** Pics restored 2017
Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
It is not threaded, and should go out to the rear when the rust loosens....
Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
Hy gents! I need your advise again! the previous one was successfully solved.
I've bought a depot-condition elevation mechanism for my MG tripod, but it has one problem, I cannot even think is it hard or not.
If you look at the pic attached, two fixators (##2) move to the right very good, but inspite this the drum (#1) DO NOT move to the left, even i cant pull it. The eared nut (#5) was turned ~90 degrees CCW.
I also attach the exploded view, in russian.
I can unscrew two screws (##3), i suppose they fasten the part #29 in exploded view, but what is the next? Does #29 stops the main axis #28?.
What is the nut (#4) in photo?
I greatly appreciate any advise and help, guys!
if interesting i can take pics of my tripod, it was found in a battlefield))

Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
If parts #2 move, the drum is already pulled out-when the drum is pushed in,it locks the two levers.Part #2 should move up and down, when The drum is pulled out,you will see small notches opposite the numerals. They should have white paint in them, maybe worn off.Try pushing the drum in.Eared wing nut turns approx 1 1/4 turns, clockwise locks the cylinder, counterclockwise loosens.Turn it to the left and try to rotate drum.I don't see #29 in the diagram.#4 is the opposite end of the shaft, mine has no nut there, but when I rotate drum,it moves slightly.Hope this helps, let us know.Yes,pictures of your found lafette would be very nice. Please excuce my poor Russian,it is inelegant!Glad to have you here on the site. ---bil

Welcome ualexj !!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't help you with your tripod, but I can give you a genuine greeting.
We LOVE pictures here (don't we, DA?). Feel free to post liberally.
What an adventure it must be to roam the former battlefields of Russia. It is an undertaking that most of us can only dream about. (Keeping in mind, of course, that those fields represent a great loss of life and the spilling of much blood.)
IF you have uncovered other treasures in your digs, we would love to see them. You might wish to open a new subject topic catalogueing for us pictures of the former fields of battle, and the items you have managed to rescue from the earth.
I'm looking forward to more. And, welcome again.

Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
Ohhhhh c'mon ya sissie ... take off the data plate so you can get in there with paint!!
I can send you replacement rivits!! I have 496 of them!! Yeah, last year I bought a box of 500 so I could do my Lafette. I'm not kidding. They are stainless. Want some? PM me.
On a serious note - all of those parts are blued on my Lafette. Not on yours?
Looking great!!

Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
From what I'm aware, and from my own lafette, the grip/oil bottle, trigger lever(inc spring and fitting), elevation knob and elevation lock butterfly nut should be unpainted as they are all blued.

Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
A definite NO-NO! The blued search-mech's are postwar refurbished by Jugoslavia. Here is my late 1938 3 tone camo with a correct (but not matching!) search mech in panzergrey with brown camouflage (normally associated with 1939 production Lafettes!). Note that all the parts mentioned are in German camo colors, and that you can see the red primer on the edges, peeping through!

Re: MG34 Lafette Restoration
My lafette is going back to exactly original. Bergflak is correct and I have the pictures to prove that there was original paint and red primer peaking through on those parts that you have stated.Tommygunn wrote:From what I'm aware, and from my own lafette, the grip/oil bottle, trigger lever(inc spring and fitting), elevation knob and elevation lock butterfly nut should be unpainted as they are all blued.

this is why I post this is so that you can see how an unmolested Mg34 (or at least this one) was painted. where they all like this, who knows. But I assure you this one is going back just like it was back then.
