MG-Munition Box

Post by MP44 »

i picked up this emty box a couple weeks ago. Someone had painted the entire inside a gloss black and the front two dividers were taken out. I made two new dividers and painted them, and also stripped off all the gloss black paint revealing all the original tan paint.

Very nice! Most commonly found on armoured vehicles that had a 34 or 42 for close defence.

What did you strip the black paint off with, to leave the original paint untouched?

At first I tried using acetone but that didn't work too well, then I switched to lacquer thinner which worked very well. Just brushed it on with a small throw away paint brush, one small section at a time and wiped it off with a clean rag each time. If you leave it on too long it just hardens up again. Had to go back over everything a few times. Took me about 3 hours to do the entire inside.

Thanks, it's the first one I've ever seen except for in the book.

Here's a picture of what the inside looked like before stripping and adding the missing dividers.
I also stripped the black paint off the handle and hasps, and touched up the bare metal on that one side.
This was the sellers photo when I bought it.

You did a good job of matching the old paint when touching up!
