MG3 tripod with MG34?

Post by RetVet »

Anyone try adapting one of the MG3 tripods for use with an MG34? I have one of those along with an MG42/M53 AA tripod. I know there are adapters available for the AA tripod, but haven't seen anything for an MG3. Don't have my MG34 together yet, so this is all just thinking out loud....

dont have my gun atm (at TNW to fix the trigger issues), tripod and adapter arrived yesterday. from what I can tell, screws in place of the rear bipod retaining spring, using the existing screw.

Well, this is my first post and I might as well dive in face first.
I have an MG34 semi and the MG3 tripod to mount it on. The gun came with the mounting block in a little baggy. I purchased the gun back in 2002 and have never fired it. After carrying a bolt action rifle for two years in my reeacting unit, I decided to purchase the two part blank-fire barrel and try to put the old girl into action.
Anyhow, here are some pics of the adapter and the gun mounted on the tripod. The remote trigger assembly lines up perfectly when the gun is mounted.

Hello I have a simple questions to ask. From what I have seen online the wartime mg42, post war yugo lafettes and the H&k tripods all have the same mounting system. The reason I'm asking is because I know TNW does sell the adapters for the mg34 to fit the H&K tripods. So in theory this would mean it would fit the war time and post war yugo lafettes correct? Any help would be appreciated before I shellout some cash for a 42 lafette.

Well it looks like it might work. Looking at the above pics we see that the spring and it's two screws were removed and that large block was screwed on, hopefully in the same spot so no new holes were added. As far as the trigger setup goes I don't see a pic for it. From what I'm reading it should work.
Good Luck

Awesome awesome awesome. Well I'm about to get a yugo lafette in dunklegel (as soon as the Manning trial is over and I can go home) So if it doesn't work I'm sure someone on this forum wouldn't mind purchasing it. Now if it does work out I'm deciding on whether to keep it dunklegelb or change it to the green that's most commonly seen. What's your opinion?

Not come across many folks wanting to repaint a Yugo lafette from Dunkelgelb to the famous puke green!! Most people leave it as a WW2 looky-likey even if it is postwar.... each to their own I guess :D

Some folks like to leave it in the chipped up different color they got it in and others want to strip everything down and repaint. I say to each their own.

@ pug42 & 42rocker

Its still up in the air whether I'd be repainting the lafette. As I mentioned before it is currently dunklegelb, and from what I've seen on the web it looks amazing to have a dunklegelb lafette with a dark mg on it. Its pretty much art with a boom. However (not sure if puke green is that atrocious yugo green or the German dark green?) I really do love the color photos of the darker lafettes seen through out Europe. At the same time I don't have the room nor equipment to properly repaint the lafettes.

Regards,

Cbass

The light washed out pea-like green is the Yugo original colour that is commonly referred to as "puke green"... German lafettes were factory painted in either dark grey (RAL 7021) early war, or dunkelgelb (RAL 7028) late war. Other colours, and even camo finishes are possible from field repaints. The 'dark' version you refer to would be the dark grey, which happily is still available in the modern RAL paint charts. Dunkelgelb would have to be made by a specialist company that can match to a sample (or already has, and stocks it). Be aware there are two types of Dunkelgelb though: 1943 code RAL 7028 was noticeably more 'buttery' than the 1944 formulation which is a straightforward beige with a brownish cast to it. Don't really know why these colours are described as dark yellow, as yellow seems a very small part of their appearance!

Now from were the TNW bracket will be mounted to the barrel jacket to the tripod mounting pin I have it down for about 14 1/2". Does anyone know the measurement on the yugo lafette from were the tripod mount to the barrel shroud is?
