Lafette Tripod Markings/Manufacturer?

Post by ChrisPCook »

Just wondering what some of the common makers of the 42 Lafette tripods were, I have seen a lot stamped FSU up on top of the topcover with a date following that....what other manufacturer marks are commonly seen? thanks, Chris...

Has anyone seen this particular code on the back..."dar" of a 42/34 tripod?
I did a quick lookup and it is legit for a manufacture code...
Metallindustrie Schoenbeck Schoenebeck AG, Schoenbeck Schoenebeck on the Elbe

Thanks, Chris...

I have an MG34 Lafette/Tripod dated 1940 down in the "For-Sale-Section" of our Board that was manufactured by a "code" "S" over "652" inside of a triangle.......I don't recall which manufacturer that is.....

I wish someone would find out who it was. I have 2 of them by that same manufacture. But nobody seems to know.

According to Michael Heidler's Deutsche Fertigungskennzeichen bis 1945, ( a big book on Mfg codes) 652 is the code for Metallindustrie Schonebeck AG, Schonebeck/Elbe, Friedrichstrasse 27, Sachsen-Anhalt. Not sure why the "S" either?

This same manufacturer is later code "dar" so apparently the same maker made the MG42 mount above and the MG34 mounts below in this same thread!

hi ,according to the book "german military letter codes 1939-1945" stands the letter "s" for :
BSW-Berlin-Suhler-Werke GmbH ,Weimar . assembler of k98 rifles made by the Sachsengruppe .
maybe they made tripods to...?

Hi,
sorry for the late reply, I haven't had much time for my hobby the past month.

The "S" stands for "Simson & Co., Suhl", but this company did not make the item. The real manufacturer can be found by the number written below the "S". It was a trick to fool the Allied control teams because they thought that all these products have been made by Simson.

A well known example is the code "S/42". The number "42" means Mauser Oberndorf.

The same trick was used on ammunition. "P" means Polte Magdeburg, but the real manufacturer was hidden by an attached number.
You can see it very often on headstamps like "P131" and so on.

With best wishes
Michael

BTW: If someone is interested, I got a new package with books from the print shop some weeks ago. So it's available again.
