Armoured vehicle mount

Post by Tiger »

The MG34's were set up for right hand feeding because many fortress mounts and armoured vehicles required a gun fed from the right.

note the ammo bin on r/h side and viewing scope.

Yes, fortress mounts and many vehicle mounts required right hand feed. That is one reason why MG34 production continued for the entire war.

That's my photo, by the way. That MG34 fortress mount is in my garage.

No, I don't care. Here is a link to one post I did on this item.

There is a link in that thread to another forum where I showed some of the restoration of the fortress mount. Here is that link

mg.34 fortress mount

Post by Damien Horn »

Hi,
Just seen the picture of your mount. I have just sold my own example to another collector. It was totally complete with the armored shields over the ball mount and all the optical cables ....a really nice example that has a known history coming from a German bunker only 1 mile from my house.
I got £9000 for it, so hopefully this news might make your day.
Damien.

I saw some pics of the mount you had. I was pretty awesome. Mine does not have shields and one other part is missing, but I think I will find it some day. My mount had little or no original paint remaining so much has been repainted. Not the best situation, but I didn't want to watch it rust.

HI,
I HAVE SEARCED MY COMPUTER AND I CANNOT FIND A SINGLE PICTURE OF THE MOUNT. I GUESS I DELETED THEM WHEN I SOLD IT. BUT I ALSO THINK I POSTED THEM ON THIS SITE PRIOR TO SELLING IT IN THE HOPE THAT ONE OF THE BIG US COLLECTORS WOULD MAKE ME AN OFFER I COULD NOT REFUSE, BUT NO ONE DID.
ALL THE BEST,
DAMIEN.

Isn't there a law on the Jersey Islands about stealing things from the inside of the fortifications there ?.......Is there not local groups dedicated to the preservation of these sites, and would really be pissed at what you have done ?.... There is a gentleman there named John Germain, that I am sure, would do what-ever to keep this from happening. ...........
I believe this would be akin to me, removing a cannon mount from say Ft.Sumpter, a Civil War era fort, for my own profit here in the USA. It surely would be frowned upon, I would be charged.
Is that a danger there, or not ?..........jw :?:

HI,
FIRSTLY, MAY I POINT OUT THAT I HAVE STOLEN NOTHING AT ALL. THE MOUNT I SOLD FROM THE ISLAND WAS PURCHASED BY MYSELF FROM ANOTHER COLLECTOR LOCALLY, WHO HAD HIMSELF PURCHASED IT FROM A COLLECTOR YEARS BEFORE. IT WAS REMOVED FROM THE BUNKER AT LEASR 50 YEARS AGO AT A TIME WHEN SUCH ITEMS WERE OF NO INTEREST OR VALUE AND IT WAS STILL THE THING TO DESTROY OR GET RID OF ANY TRACES OF OUR FIVE YEARS OF OCCUPATION. SO THE FIRST PERSON TO GET THE MOUNT ACTUALLY PERHAPS WITHOUT KNOWING IT SAVED A PIECE OF HISTORY.
I BOUGHT THE MOUNT A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO TO DISPLAY IN MY MUSEUM, (THE CHANNEL ISLANDS MILITARY MUSEUM) WHICH IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC IN THE SUMMER SEASON. OWING TO SPACE THIS DID NOT HAPPEN, AND AFTER A NUMBER OF YEARS IN MY GARAGE I DECIDED TO SELL IT ON SO I COULD PURCHASE OTHER ITEMS TO DISPLY INSTEAD. I AM NOT SURE HOW TO READ YOUR MESSAGE, I DON'T KNOW IF ITS JUST AN "OUT OF INTEREST MESSAGE OR IF THE IS ANGER IN IT", BUT WHAT I CAN SAY IS THAT MUCH OF WHAT IS IN PRIVATE HANDS IN THE WAY OF GERMAN MILITARIA ONLY EXISTS TODAY HERE ON THE ISLAND BECAUSE SOMEONE STOLE IT AT SOME POINT. OBVIOUSLY DURING THE OCCUPATION IT BELONGED TO THE 3RD REICH/OCCUPYING FORCES. IF CAUGHT STEALING FROM THE GERMANS THEN WATCH OUT. AS SOON AS THE WAR WAS OVER THEN IT IMMEDIATELY CAME INTO BEING THAT ALL GERMAN MILITARIA CAME UNDER THE OWNERSHIP OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT. THERE WAS TONS AND TONS OF IT EVERYWHERE AND NO ONE WANTED IT AND MUCH WAS DESTROYED, DUMPED AT SEA, BURN'T BURYIED ETC. SO ONCE AGAIN WELL DONE TO THOSE WHO TUCKED IT AWAY AND KEPT IT FOR COLLECTORS LIKE MYSELF.
MOVING ONTO THE INTERSTED GROUPS WHO TRY TO PRESERVE BUNKERS ETC HERE ON THE ISLAND. OUR LOCAL CHANNEL ISLAND OCCUPATION SOCIETY DOES IN FACT CARE FOR QUITE A NUMBER OF BUNKERS HERE ON THE ISLAND...I MYSELF AM A MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY. THE SOCIETY ACTUALLY HAS IN ITS CARE A SECHSSCHARTENTURM BUNKER AT VAL DE LA MARE IN ST.OUEN. THIS IS THE ACTUAL BUNKER THAT THE MOUNT I HAD CAME FROM. THEY DO HAVE ANOTHER MOUNT FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE BUNKER, BUT NOT THE ORIGINAL ONE. I OFFERED THEM THE MOUNT ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS, AS I BELIEVED THEY WOULD/SHOULD HAVE WANTED IT FOR THE BUNKER AS THEY WANT TO PRESERVE AND RESTORE BUNKERS TO THE ORIGINAL WARTIME CONDITION. HAVING ASKED QUITE A NUMBER OF TIMES AND DRAWN A BLANK, WITH THEM NOT EVEN WANTING TO COME A SEE THE MOUNT I DECIDED TO TRY TO FIND A BUYER ELSEWHERE. AS I DID NOT FIND ANYONE LOCALLY TO MOVE IT ONTO IT WENT TO A COLLECTOR WHO WILL I AM SURE ENJOY IT AND LOOK AFTER IT AS IT SHOULD BE.
FOR MY PART I TRIED FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS TO GET IT TAKEN ON LOCALLY, AND THE APATHY WAS SUCH THAT IT WENT ELSEWHERE. MR.GERMAIN HAS BEEN NOWHERE TO BE SEEN IN THE WHOLE AFFAIR WHICH HAS BEEN CONDUCTED ABOVE BOARD AND IN NO SECRECY.
I AM A COLLECTOR OF OVER 35 YEARS HERE ON AN ISLAND OF 9 X 5 MILES AND I AM KNOWN TO COLLECT 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK. I HOOVER UP ALL AND EVERYTHING THAT COMES MY WAY. THAT IS HOW I COLLECT, I SPEND LOT'S OF MONEY ENSURING THAT NOTHING GETS DUMPED ANY MORE AND IS KEPT, SO I DO NOT FEEL BAD ABOUT SELLING THIS ITEM. POINT OF FACT, IT COST ME MORE THAN I SOLD IT FOR BUT SOMETHING ELSE IN THE LOT WAS WHAT I WAS AFTER.
I HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS, AND YOU ARE HAPPY WITH MY EXPLANATION. UNFORTUNATELY COLLECTING GERMAN ITEMS HERE ON JERSEY MEANS THAT ULTIMATELY YOU ARE BUYING STOLEN GOODS, BUT THEN THATS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST.

and unaware of the true nature of living on the Jersey Islands, I DID COME OFF TOO STRONG WITH MY QUESTION, AND I AM SORRY TO HAVE UPSET YOU !........I have seen John Germain's site, and have read his enthusiastic defending of the fortifications there, that I was under the impression that is was a civil offense if something was displaced, with-out govt approval. (I even at one time upset him too, so much so, his response to me was so filled with venom, I needed an anti-dote fast!)
I do have this ability of pissing people off, in my attempt to understand the whole picture of things, and , now I see ;)
Is there the possibilty of you taking some photos of these mg mts that are still mounted, and displaying them here on this site in the future ?.......again, I am sorry for coming off as the Spanish Inquisition....bob h(jw)

If you want to see what happens when private individuals do not get involved and save these items, go to Norway and look at the fortress mounts rusting away into oblivion because the gov't/museums either don't have the money or the interest to preserve them.

Many things that exist today in decent shape only exist because private individuals protected them, in many cases from the government itself. Example: look at the many WWII vintage, in some cases unissued, M3 grease guns recently cut up and destroyed a Anniston Army Depot. Thousands of them, all pieces of history now gone forever.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for you reply. I guessed it was a case of explaining the situation and all would be clear. I am glad to have cleared up any confusion. I must admit that pissing people off is something that I have a university degree in, so I totally understand where you were coming from.
I will try to get some pictures of the mounts posted here in the not too distant future.
All the best, from this once infested German stronghold.

Post by Damien Horn »

HI,
YES, THAT WAS MY MOUNT. I DELETED THE PICTURES FAR TOO QUICKLY. I JUST WANTED IT OUT OF THE WAY AND HAD BEEN ANNOYED TO THINK THAT NO ONE LOCALLY WOULD TAKE IT ON. IT HAS GONE TO A VERY GOOD HOME AND WILL CERTAINLY BE WELL LOOKED AFTER AND APPRECIATED.

Thank you guys for keeping it civil. I hate misunderstandings they can get so nasty. You guys did a great job of talking this thing out.
