zwillingssockel 36 in the Channel Islands now and then

Post by Damien Horn »

Hi,
Just went out on the cliff tops and took the comparison pictures of the zwilling bunker as it today. It is pretty near as it was during the war. The wooden cladding has gone as well as the mount and gun, but you can tell its the same place alright. Thought you might like to see them.
Damien.

you know it just amazez me how you can just walk into these places not chained or locked and retrieve items that were left after the war, although i am sure most bunkers and such are pretty well picked clean by now from scavengers and such

Bunkers

Post by Damien Horn »

Most of what is around in the way of bunkers have been picked clean. But even after 35 years of collecting here on the Island I still have bunkers that I have not been in and some I have never seen. I went to 2 bunkers last year that would never have been seen by me if a friend had not taken me to them. I did not know they existed at all.

More to come

Post by Damien Horn »

I will be doing a few more comparison pictures around the Island in the then and now style so I will post them here as well for those who are interested.
In one stretch of beach which is about 3 1/2 miles long there are well over 50 bunkers all with a story to tell. My own bunker which is open as a small museum in the summer is what I'd call right on Hitler's Atlantic Wall being less than 3 foot from the sea. In 1992 the German NCO who was in charge of the bunker came back on holiday. He was a great chap, I visited him in Germany and he gave me his Soldbuch and Wehrpass for my collection. Unfortunately he died just before Christmas. I have a couple of shot's of him with a 34. Seems strange that I miss him when all those years ago he was the enemy, and he was part of the Occupying power that ruled over my Father and Grandparents. But whenever he phoned or I called him he always asked after my Father and our little Island. A great many of the Germans who were here were so thankful, as they could so easily have been on the Russian front.
One more picture of the bunker, Just like his Father my four year old also has an interest in all the concrete that is to be found all over the Island.

Yes, please do. Your pics are great.

I used to live on Guam as a kid and wish I had more pics of that time. It was great to comb the jungle and find relics there.
