Remove slag?

Post by Kleist »

Is there a special way to do this or do just go to town any way possible? I have a bench grinder and small air tools for head porting.

just the grinder should be fine unless you need to reach into the receiver.
nothing fancy to it just get rid of the stuff .

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of
over-age juvenile delinquents running the place.

A hammer and chisel will remove some of the looser slag.

I usually start by using a welding hammer to chip off the slag, and then use a die grinder and abrasive
drums (used for porting heads) then hand file and finish up by throwing them in the sand blaster.

Remember you want them as clean as can be, ANY amount of slag will compromise your weld. But I have seen guys remove excessive amounts of material with right angle grinders take it slow and do as much by hand ;) or you will have even more to fill!!
