finicky years for 34s

I am looking into a 34 kit and recently talked to BRP. I was told that 34s prior to 1941 were finicky to operate and that later years were better if I wanted to get one that would run. I assume the tolerances were opened up in later years. My natural inclination is to get an earlier year, if possible, since I also assume the quality would be lower in 1943 and later.

Does anyone have an opinion on this subject. I am moving faster than normal in getting kits and haven't gotten a chance to research this as much as I would like.

Also, are their preferred original manufacturer's of 34s for functionality?

Thanks for any Advice,
mgfun

My budy and I both have DOT 44's and both run without any problems.
