Mg3 tripod for a mg34
will this work is there a conversion piece for the MG34 to be mounted on a MG3 tripod, Io has them ao sale and was wondering if i should go for the AA tripod or can i put a 34 on a MG3 infrantry one
Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
Depends on what you want to achieve. TNW has a "block" adapter to mount the 34 to a MG3 or MG42 tripod. It doesn't allow the original style quick barrel change though. For low volume shooting it should work.
The AA Tripods with 34 adapters are neat, but, not very practical for range shooting.

Kpt.Fritz; The guys here have discussed the little conversion block that TNW makes for the 34 in other places on this site; but, answering your question, gives me an excuse to plant a photo of one of those mg-3/42 tripods with the 34 on it, using that little TNW block.....The TNW conversion, is about $20-25.bucks, and mounts in place of the spring-clip, in front of the receiver, on the under-side of the barrel jacket. You use just one of the original screws to mount it.
Shooting these semis in these post war lafettes is great. Whether shooting blanks in a re-enactment, or live on the range, you have sort-of a fire control set-up when shooting from these. I would say, get one while the prices are low.
The trigger linkage, aids in firing, because the hard trigger pull is un-perceptable, and once you zero the the (5-6x) optics to the gun, you will be right on target everytime way the hell out there!...I believe, once you have fitted your gun to the tripod, and after you zero the optic, you will love it.

How acceptable are these for re-enactments?Do most units require the original lafettes? ---bil

These MG3 Tripods are totally different and totally wrong for WWII Reenacting. Now you can probably get away with "the block" on a Yugo-rebuild MG42 Lafette. I may break down and do this myself. That auto traverse and search device on the Lafette kinda facinates me.

Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
In the photo above, you are looking at a modified mg-3/42 lafette....Modified for blank firing only, and for acceptance on the re-enactment battle field. .....Finding a lafette mounted MG-34/42 SA or FA on the re-enactment battle field is a rarity, even these recent days in the WWII re-enact/world.....> Most re-enact/battles are very fluid, and range over large areas, so when a 34 or 42 is employed, it is normally carried alone with the ammo. (carrying a lafette in a mobile battle is tough; I admire the real kraut soldier of the past who did).......The static position type re-enact/battle like we have in the trenches of Marion Ky, are perfect for lafette mounted 34s/42s.
The lafette above has been modified, to give the appearance of it's WWII brother.
*Issued pad, thinned/modified,frt leg
*Second pad added,frt leg
*gun cradle moved to the rear
*firing linkage adjusted, pulling to fire instead of push/f-level cut in half
It's only for blank firing, because the recoil springs now do not fnction, and only maintain the cradle pressure on the support bars.
Of course the original 34/lafette would be the best, but they are so hard to find, and when you do, they are so expensive. Some of us are waiting for them to appear, or final restoration........Most WWII re-enact/societies like the WWII HRS has the 10 ft rule. where if it appears as the real item from 10ft, it is accepted. It's a good fill-in until one gets the period one.

Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
I used to use the 10 foot rule in my drinking days-boy did that cause trouble around closing time!!
Your lafette does look better with the mods you have made.It appears lighter, also.A big plus, the original is quite heavy, even with the gun dismounted. ---bil

Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
Ty Bil; I was a pretty good drinker in my time, but am not familiar with that 10 foot rule?..

Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
A useless rule about the attractiveness of women near closing time-I would not recomend it,I think that is how I found my ex wife!Personally,I would rather Have either type of lafette!
I am still working on my 42lafette,and will get the adaptor if I can't find the correct one for the 34.They have become both scarce and pricey. ---bil

Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
Finally got mg34 from tnw and the mg3 adaptor block but my question now is it looks as though i have to grind the hell out of trigger ext. to allow mg34 to fit mg3 tripod ...Is this typical as everything is pinned allowing no adjustment? Thanks in advance Ed

Re: Mg3 tripod for a mg34
Yes Ed, you do have to file/grind a "U" shaped cut in the trigger 'tab'.....Later on I can place a photo of what it looks like once done.......bobh
