TNW 34 cams getting loose

Post by Intruder196 »

Does anybdy have any suggestions on what to do when the rivets that hold in the receiver cams start to loosen up?
On the lower cam both rivets are movable with a touch of the finger.

you may need a manual, that sounds like a touchy area, it may just need new rivets

I would contact TNW directly. They may warranty the work. Or atleast fix it for a minimal fee.

mine are just ground down rivets. All drilled out easily when I took them out.

That's exactly what mine look like. I bet they will drill out easy like yours did.

As far as TNW warranty work goes, I got my gun in November 2002 and so their warranty expired some time ago.

smoggle, have you re-installed the cams you removed? Do you think there is a way to tighten them up instead of drilling and replacing them?

I would guess-timate that I have fired a minumum of 3500 rounds thru mine. That's a total including blank ammo as well as live ammo.

I haven't put them back in yet. Not sure you could tighten the old ones up. May want to see if anybody with more riveting experience chimes in. They shouldn't come loose unless there was space behind them. Even with the rivets out the cams were tight.

Rivits.....do it correct the first time:
NOTE: If the gun is a new TNW semi-only gun...check with TNW as this may be covered for free.

1: Rivits are not suppose to be "tightened-up" as they start to stretch and metal will weaken...like a coat-hanger....replace them....and at the same time, find out why/where the cams are coming lose.

2: Drill out the centers of the rivit-heads (which are counter-sunk) but try to not drill into the receiver metal...once you have a slight depression/hole in the center of the rivit.....use a small metal pin-type punch to tap out the old rivits. If I remember correctly, the MG34 cams are held into place with only one (1) rivet in each cam.

3: Remove the old rivits and two cams.....and then clean out where they seat into the receiver. Check to insure that they do not "wobble" (as in a rocking-motion from a bad seating area which you then have to decide if the cam is bad?...or the receiver is in need of repair?). (NOTE: If this is a TNW weapon....I would call to see if this is covered under warantee before you do any work on the gun).

4: Clean the cams and install with new rivits....these are inserted from the inside...and held in place from the inside. Set the rivit-heads and trim to the same contour as the receiver.

NOTE: MG34/SA34 Cam-Rivits (like the Ejector-Plate-Screws) we have yet find out the correct-size, and to locate a supplier for both.

Let the Board know how this worked out for you, RichardS.

Thanks Blanksguy, I will replace them as soon as a source for the proper rivets is found. In the meantime the cams themselves are not loose, so I guess that is good news. It's just I noticed when cleaning that the rivets will move a bit.
I need to invest in a set of spare cams anyways. Maybe this is the time to do it.
