Greetings

My cousin told me about this place, so I figured I'd ask for your help.

I have an MG34, (SA).

I keep having one problem. The Barrel Jacket won't lock onto the receiver completely. It's very difficult to turn and usually requires my rawhide hammer or rubber mallet to get it closed. I don't think this is supposed to happen.

What is up with this thing?

First welcome to the site. There are several folks far better than I that will be along shortly to help you with this. I'm happy to say that my mg34 closes well enough on my dummy receiver. Need to build a working semi receiver someday.

It's nearly impossible to close the jacket and receiver together by hand.

Who's semi gun is it (what manufacturer)? How long have you had it (is it still under warranty)?

So would an original reciever not fit on it's original shroud?

I believe that each weapon is "timed" different. ie closes That said most mg34's are close plus or minus but are close enough to work. If you got a receiver that plus a lot and a shroud that minus a lot (or vice verse) then with a large difference you might have a problem.

I have a slight fit problem on one of my parts kit and it's tight but does close.
Hopefully someone with a lot more knowledge on mg34's (like John earlier post) will get back in and add his 2 cents to this and we will all get to learn something.

The threaded post that connects the two pieces is off by just a tiny bit. It will need unscrewed a tad from the receiver so that the post sticks out a hair more. The receiver will close properly then. Notice how I say a tiny bit, a tad, and a hair. It really is a close tolerance thing. As tight as possible is best, but yours is a wee bit too tight. You might separate the two parts and make sure there isn't any crap inside or on the post threads that is making it 10 thousandths too tight. Perfectly clean and a few drops of oil is all it should take.

I'd give Stan a try since it's his build. The fix is simple, but it's not simple to achieve the perfect correction. Experience with such things count.

How do I unscrew that post?

+1 on what John said, perfectly clean, I have a little bit of lithium grease over the ones that fit tight, reduces friction making it easier to close and open. Chris...

I was told to grind down the bottom of the shroud until it fits


I just got it back from bluing.

I think that I would try Chris Cook's idea first.
Where did the grind idea come from?

Stan at Project Guns, but he said to do it prior to refinishing.

But still...I am going to try grease and see if that helps. I don't shoot enough rounds where I need to change the barrel every time.

Make sure the threads are clean first, and inside the hole too. The put a dab of grease on the threads and see how it fits.

It will wear the blue off where it rubs. If it's only a small spot, touch a bit of grease to it so see if that helps, or you might bump it with a sander.

Also, check the threads on the post that acts as the hinge. Make sure they're not beat a little. Smooth with a file if they have a ding or two.

While I do have some experience with guns and mechanical things, it helps to have ready every manual in two languages.

Translating manuals requires that the subject matter is completely understood to be able to rewrite the information accurately into another language. Therefore, I've spent years thinking about exactly what the original manuals say and mean, and the how and why of it, in order to be able to accurately put it in English.

Fortunately, I've also had some pretty nice toys loaned or made available to me so that I can take them apart to see exactly how they work. It's been a fun ride.
