how would I go about cleaning the cosmo out of fabric without ruining it? I got a pretty decent deal on a yugo gunners kit and it has a barrel mitt and a receiver cover in it but both are smeared with cosmoline.

Soak in kerosene, then wash with soap and water.

I'm not sure if this has been already hit on but I know for me the best way to remove cosmoline from metal (not sure if it would work with fabric swell) was to use the solvent tank. We just got one in our arms room and I just received 12 mg belts that were packed with cosmoline. I tried almost everything I read online. Heat gun, hair dryer, wd40, etc. And it was to time consuming and wasn't getting much done. So I decided to go to the company armorer and try it out and boy let me tell ya it works like a charm! Now I'm not sure the exact solvent they used (I'll find out later today if not by Monday....I'm expecting some ammo cans for my 8mm) but I managed to scrub all 11 remaining belts clean in about 30 minutes tops. Now the only issue I had with the solvent I'm work is the post war belts, for some reason they kinda erroded a bit but its still functional and can definantly still be used.

Soak belts in a bucket of diesel fuel for a week and rinse. No trouble at all.
