price check on a TNW mg

Post by landser »

Hello everyone
I found a guy that has a TNW mg for sale, it looks almost brand new, he's the second owner. He can't get to cycle correctly at all. He wants $2400.00 with some extras included. He told me he was using only ww2 8mm ammo to try to make this mg34 cycle. And i bet he wasn't lubing the gun up enough also. i thought i would try to pick it up for under $2000.00 ? whats everyone think?
thanks for the help.

Try to talk him down, but find out if it was indeed a TNW-build, or someone that built it w/ a parts kit and TNW receiver (like see if he has the original owner's receipt). There were some out-of-spec TNW receivers that were rumored to have been released some time ago, there was hopes that Weaponeer members could have had a crack at them but it never materialized (notwithstanding the regular TNW '34 receiver group buy), so those receivers ended up somewhere. As to ammo, my internals are TNW (I think everyone's semi internals are) and it feeds no problem with simple commercial FMJ, heavily lubed yes, w/ that white slippery stuff TNW recommends, but go cautiously into this. However I think 42Rocker made the cogent point that it may certainly be worth a try.....Good luck :D

thought i would ask him if he would take $1800.00 cash. also maybe the ww2 8mm ammo he using is not any good? causing it to not cycle correctly? Is the resale on these pretty good? is there a huge market for resale, because if i buy it and cant work out the issues on the mg,well i dont want to lose money.

I believe that the prices that I posted were very close to market prices. At $2000 I think that I would be trying to find the cash to do the deal. And I own a mg34 parts kit already.

Check gunbroker and see what the prices are for a mg34 parts kit without a receiver. If you can find one up for sale that is.

Ok, checked cf and they don't seem to have anything listed with my search but I believe that they used to sell them for $3400.

pick up my 'like new' TNW mg34, got 3 belts,2 start tabs, 1 mag drum, 500 rounds of 8mm ammo, aircraft sight,1 aircraft tripod[postwar] for $1900.00 I think i did pretty good  i disassemble the TNW mg34 on the guys floor to check everything out, when you pull the trigger nothing moves inside the trigger assembly.it looks like the small pin which is located below the shear is gone? Where can i find one? This gun was builted by TNW and has the TNW trigger assembly installed.
thanks guys.

Sounds like a good deal.
TNW I'd call tnw first and talk with them. If that does not make you happy then call Brian at brpguns.com

Enjoy

First congrats on the '34, they look cool shooting, and they look damn cool even quiet, just a sleek looking weapon.

42Rocker's advice is spot-on, also, though he is busy, you may want to try and reach out to Stan at Project Guns www.ProjectGuns.com he built a lot of the conversions (as well as Jorge--not sure if he still is there), anyway Stan would know what to do, and he is a really nice guy.

The other lead is Lonnie Ingram in Ohio, he built a fair amount of '34 trigger semi's w/ the TNW parts, there are members here with his info, though to be honest his health has been an issue for some time, so though a very great guy and bright gunsmith, save that for a last resort.

And finally if you have to send it somewhere and pay a guy to look at it, there is Bob Naess, a member of the forum, I would trust him more than most surgeons I know- yes, he is that good.

Good luck.
