recuperator spring...
can someone give me an idea on how long a good usable recuperator spring should be? any idea where i can find a new spring for this?

According to John Baum's translation on Inspection and Repair of the Infantry Devices (H. Dv. 181/7) the Recuperator spring length is 75.5mm for the 25 coil spring and 85mm for the 18 coil spring.
MG34.com has springs. Bob Naess at Black River Militaria rebuilds the recuperator for $75.00. This includes new springs.

Bob's rebuilt recouperator units are for the MG42, the MG34 uses a single coil spring as you posted above. Gulfstream4 thank you very much for the info I do appreciate it... and the manual of Jbaums you speak of does it happen to include all the MG34 spring information like coil number and length?? I picked up a couple of manuals from him at the sar show in phoenix but managed to neglect that one...
