MG34/42 Basket Can..Unknown Type??
MG34/42 Basket Can..Unknown Type??
I came across what appears to be a MG34/42 Basket ammo can..but I have never seen one like this one. Anybody know what it is...German...Russian? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like a standard WWII style assault-drum......that is missing the mounting catch/spring/pin to mout it on the feed-tray.....and also missing the dust-cover and catch-spring-assembly that was on the side.
...other than that......it just looks like it has seen better days.

That star shaped piece where the hex nut should be is unusual. Anyone have any idea who made THAT feature?

It is unusual.
I never snapped off that top part to see if there is a star underneith.
Is there anything inside that looks different?

The condition of the metal and distance in the photographs makes it impossible to discern any markings or other differences.

I am just taking a stab at this topic....I remember seeing lots of pics of mg34's being used in viet nam by the viet cong...that could be the source of the "star"...I know they had very primative shops for fixing weapons and making bombs etc...possible ?

It's unlikely but I suppose anything is technically possible.Artie in Miami wrote:I am just taking a stab at this topic....I remember seeing lots of pics of mg34's being used in viet nam by the Viet Cong...that could be the source of the "star"...I know they had very primative shops for fixing weapons and making bombs etc...possible ?

Re: MG34/42 Basket Can..Unknown Type??
I came across the unusual ammo can while searching on the Internet. This particular site only deals in items found in Europe Battlefields from WW1 and WW2............. and are considered Battlefield Relics. When I requested more information such as markings??........dates??....I was informed he had just sold it. So it is definitely from the European area......got buried after use.......and .....forgotten about ...but by who. I have also supplied pictures to a Spanish Militaria dealer who specializes in MG34 and the MG42........he has never seen one like it. So thru his network he has contacted another serious collector in Hamburg...it still comes back as completely unknown and unique.
I certainly whish I would have had the opportunity to get it.but too late.
