Barrel: a silly question

What does an MG 34 barrel do between shots, while unlocked? Does it rest out of battery in rearmost position? If so, what keeps it there? Where does it end up after change?

There is a spring loaded rod in the receiver that bears against the barrel extension and returns the barrel forward as soon as the bolt unlocks from the barrel extension.
