U Boots

Post by salt6 »

All the pictures I've seen of U-Boots with MGs seem to have MG 34s. Any ideas why the navy used the 34 so much?

Great men are born in fire, it is the privilege of lessor men to light the flame, no matter the cost

the 34s went to the guys with the spare time to keep them perfectly clean (navy-airforce types), the 42s went to the guys who had too much work to do to be worried about needing to keep their guns spotless(grunts-SS) .

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of
over-age juvenile delinquents running the place.

U-571

If you look at the scene from the movie "U571" there are British sailors that were torpedoed a day earlier in a lifeboat that are spotted by the UBoat. The captain ordered the UBoat sailer to shoot at them with the tower mounted MG34.The MG34 is the most versatile machine gun that has ever been designed. It has special mounts that make it easy to install in tanks, fortification mounts, airplanes(The MG34 almost replaced the MG15 in Luftwaffe planes but the idea was dropped because it's rate of fire wasn't high enough for Luftwaffe demands of 1100RPM's or above). The MG34 was modified for 1200RPM but the parts wore out too fast.Great reference books about the mg34 "German Universal Machine Guns"by Folke Myrvang(Inter-Ordnance sells the book for around $80.International Military Antiques sells "German Machine Guns" by Daniel Musgrave for $25.I've got both and I would recommend spending the extra bucks for Myrvangs book. One of the cool features of the MG34 is that it can be broken down into half it's size.It can fit into a large suitcase.

Good show Beltlead !! Did you snap that shot directly at the screen?
Those guys look wacked. I'd drop a few extra depth charges just to make sure they don't surface.

Yes! I put the DVD on pause and took the shot without flash.Another recent movie with MG34 footage is "Harts War".In one scene aa American plane is straffing a POW train by mistake and a German soldier is firing at the plane with a MG34 on a AA tripod at the train station. When I find the "Harts War movie I'll display the shot.If you want to see some cool MG42 and MG34 footage, check out the "Battle for Neretva" with Yul Brenner filmed around 1969.

Hart's War (Early version AA tripod-aluminum)

Post by BELTLEAD »

This is a still from the movie "Hart's War".Pictured is a German soldier firing at a P51 Mustang that has been strafing a trainyard. He is using an MG34 on a prewar anti-aircraft tripod(This version was made almost entirely of aluminum). The Dreifuss liteweight model AA tripod replaced it because aluminum was set aside for aicraft production.
