I would think that at this time you can get a nice 4-cut mg 42 kit for around $1200.This would be a German cut-up,with the barrel bushing area intact, all parts original, with a good barrel. They are around for more, and if you are lucky,a little less.1200 should get a nice one,a few hundred more if it has .308 parts included. If you can get a 3-cut,so much the better.Expect to pay a little more.Check the pics of the cuts, make sure they aren't a real butcher job.I think you should be able to get the 53 kits in a private [non dealer] sale for around $300 ,give or take a little.Remamber it is cheaper to get more parts at once than to try to piece it together one piece at a time. The 53 kits will cost you in missing parts, not so much missing as just not there.Look on this site, and also gunbroker.Good luck, and I hope you find what you need. ---bil

Hey I have an MG 42 kit for sale if you are still interested. I do have pics, but I have to find the camera to hook it up to the computer. Drop me an email if you are interested. I tired to post the kit for sale on the forums here but I don't have enough posts to get into that section.
MG42 Kit is in .308, all the dirty birds are visible.

My kit cost me about 700 bucks, and I have to make the barrel bearing myself. It was an FTF M53 kit, an IMA rear receiver (long sold out), and a camming section from a member here (damned near impossible to find).
If I had the money back then, then I would have definately bought a complete 3 or 4 cut, because the amount of work and missing parts I had to get is a real pain.
Of course if you get an M53 kit for like $300, and Cold Steels receiver for another 3, then you have the exact same thing I got. Only problem is that it will take you forever to get Cold steels receiver, and you will need the repair bearing. It will still all cost you under a thousand.
bigsexy, I have seen you around so much, I thought that you had bought a '42 long ago!

bigsexy, glad to see a fellow Southern Illinois on the site. I was born and raised there.
Too bad the $$$ was directed else where, I feel your pain. If you do want a kit, check here time to time once money is available. There is kits still out there, depends on the price and how bad you want one. I built two, its awesome to have and priceless!
Some of the recent gunbroker auctions had some decent prices lately also.
