I'm looking for field gray to repaint a 1939 tripod & several early ammo cans.
Would like to find some original colored primer and paint.
Anybody know of a retailer here in the US that has it ? Thanks

I am also looking for paint to redo an mg42 lafette. What color would to correct?

ok, i will take a stab at this.

I believe the first poster is looking for dunklegrau or fieldgrau for the ammo cans and early laffette

the second poster for the 42 laffette is looking for dunkelgelb or ordnance tan.

1944's paint is thin thin thin. While the color is spot on, it doesn't hold up for crap. Three coats on my lafette and if you touch it, it scrathes thru the paint to the primer. The primer is rock solid

Just ask around at paint stores. The good ones will be able to mix RAL colors in oil based paint. I mix the paint about 3-1 (paint - thinner) and it workes really well.

Thanks for responding. what are you using for an sprayer? An airbrush or an HVLP or a small touchup sprayer?

I use a Paasche touch up sprayer. I made a custom tip for it that allows me to adjust the pattern while I am spraying.This allows me to get the flat areas quick and the complicated parts from getting too much paint at once.

I have used 1944's spray paint with good results. If the paint is thin put more coats on. I also baked the paint on in an oven. So far no problems.

You'll find this problem frequently with canned paint. Everytime I found someone to can my paint, it was thin. BEsides the paintmaker thinning the paint, the cans come precharged with thinner....makes for a soupy mess.

the gun gets blued or black park(like an ar-15) , guys have said the duracoat looks nice too, mg3 is grey park

Thanks to everyone that's responded, I've got some paint on the way from
1944 Militaria. Does anyone know of a good match for the original red primer ?
All the paint I've found locally isn't red enough, any idea's ? Thanks

i am searching this out too. I need to try some good automotive paint stores or general paint stores to see it they will mix the red primer. I will try to find the RAL number for the primer. I saw it somewhere.

It is my understanding that all Lafettes were factory finished in Dark Grey (Dunkelgrau 7021). The other colours such as Ordnance tan (7021) or Ordnance Green (6006) or the camouflage patterns/oversprays were all field repaints. This is true of the Dreibein AA tripods as well.

Not 100% sure about this, but on the other hand I have never seen a Lafette with original base paint in any other colour. Even when they are other colours there seems to always be dark grey underneath the green/tan/camo/postwar. My own '39 one is out of Norway and has dark grey under the Norwegian olive green.

Just my 2 pence worth (sorry 2 cents!!

good information! It's always good to hear from members that have the opertunity to see many examples of german original equipment. My information is based only on research on the web. Your findings would go along with this statement I found in the links post previously.

In 1943, basic change in the colour of military hardware: HM Nr 181 orders the Dunkelgelb (dark tan) colour RAL 7028 to be used for all military vehicles, whatever the theater of operations. In theory everything should have been repainted, but in practice you could still find anything at the end of the war.

I would imagine that this also went for equipment too to simplify things.
