My understanding of these pads is that they are constructed from wool and asbestos fibers .
The wool mat is similar to a medium grey "felt"... and the asbestos appear as thin, transparent "hairs", inter-woven together.
I haven't had this pad clinically tested for the actual presence of asbestos, but in comparison to the other two original pads that I have, they are all exact... and unless the Wehrmacht had secretly began using a "NON-authentic" WW2 asbestos in 44, you can most certainly rest assured that the answer to your question would be yes, this is made from authentic WWII asbestos.
This particular pad was part of an incomplete werkzeugtasche that has been in my collection for at least 10 years.
If you'd like a close-up of the material, or can fill me in on the best means of determining authenticity... by all means, let me know.
I was kidding as usual, but I do think it is important for us to realize that original pads like these do present a threat of asbestos exposure, although unless you use it as a gas mask filter, it shoulud not be a significant threat. This is an excellent item you have for sale. (BTW, I am a bit hungry right now...)
