It was done in the field by the waffenmeister. It is made from 6mm steel wire. See Folke Myrvang's book page 132 for a bit more info. The book is worth getting even though it is a bit expensive.

The ring is shown in the 1944 dated HDv 181/7 MG42 armorer's manual with full dimensions. It was made and installed by the armorer in the field.

I would assume the waffenmeisters were in some sort of workshop out in the field but not at the battle front, I would guess its hard to concentrate on fixing things with bullets whizzing past your head. Sort of close enough to fix stuff quickly but not close enough to be in too much danger.

Just looked at the book by Myrvang (German Universal Machineguns) and the wire you need is actually 5mm and the holes are 6mm. The wire length needed is 114mm.

I would get the manual from Jbaum. He translates the old German manuals and sells them on his web site. I would get the manuals but I cannot justify buying manuals for a gun that does not work...Hmmm how do I justify buying a gun that does not work and costs way more that the manuals :?

Longhorn-you ARE confused! :? :? You buy the manuals to find out how they used to work! Why buy a history book if you already know how it ends?I have manuals for all of my cars, most of them don't work either! Johns books make good reading anyway. ---bil

What! Are you telling me all these history books of WW2 end the same, how dull is that ;) I have to confess that I have been to look and my problem is along the lines of this...I will get that one and that oh and this goes with the last one and these 2 are recommended. Next thing I know I have bought all the books Jbaum does and the girlfriend is not speaking too me because I have bought more stupid gun stuff. I think the problem is called not knowing when to stop.

The problem is how to get all the stuff you want without her finding out!Pretend you always had it-'That was in the hall closet,in the back,remember?',or-"it isn't mine,I'm just looking at it for a friend!' This could explain why I am single. :D

That trick is starting to wear a bit thin now. I think she is a bit suspicious that an armoury has appeared that "I have always had" yet it did not move into the house we bought 3 years ago.

Buy all the books I've done? I have to go to the bathroom now.

First off, NEVER stop. Excuse: I can't help myself, it's a disease!

Let's see,,,, so you're saying it's a choice between buying gun stuff and your girl friend?

Question: Which will you still have in 30 years? Answer: Gun stuff

Your choice is simple. :) What is most important must take precedence.

And for Fab: In case you didn't know, the ring was for attaching the sling. It's made of mild steel wire - nothing special. It's simply stuck in the holes and bent over so that the front sling hook has a different place to attach.

i find this ring is interresting
if somebody bought a cut receiver with this ring on, and doesn't need this ring, i would be very interesting to buy it.
