MG 42 relic

Post by longhorn109 »

Just remembered I forgot to post the pictures of the relic I bought before Christmas.

The photos I had seen before I bought it were flattering it a little. Most of the markings on it had been lost to rust but there are still a few . The rear sight is marked as are the parts in the top cover and the camming piece has 2 stamps a WaA stamp and what appears to be a stamp SWJ.

It would appear that the charging handle, bipod and the pistol grip have been replaced with later parts.

Its was stripped down when I got it and I put it in a bath of chemical rust remover (used for cleaning rusty car parts) and that got rid of all the loose rust.

When I reassembled I discoverd it was possible to cock and dry fire it  I gave it a coat of oil to prevent further rust and that is how it is now.

I have a spare German grip I can put on it and the bipod has been replaced but some parts will be needed to complete it. The 2 piece retaining pin for the grip is missing, the recoup is shot and will need replacing and finally the charging handle will need swopping or fixing because the spring in it is broken and the handle flops about.

A little CLP and she'll clean up just fine. :) It actually looks great in its present state as a display piece. I wish I could say I dug that in my back yard, but I live in the USA.
