MG.42 1st pattern cocking handle.

Post by Damien Horn »

Here's a few pictures of one of my 42's with a 1st pattern cocking handle. Not something you encounter every day. Something different for a change.
Damien.

They didn't work very well, that's why they're rare today. Repro-ing it would only be for looks since they don't work well. They had little leverage and would sometimes take two hands to pull.

I just saw one of these in a movie - "A Bridge Too Far" - at about the 10:00 minute mark. The Germans are in retreat, and the gunner is carrying the MG42 over his shoulder, holding the barrel end. You can see the "early style" lever in at least two scenes.

There are tons more MG34 pics but they are very brief.

FWIW.

Hello Damien,

very nice pictures, and to be honest one of the very rare to see the early cooking handle so clearly.

I have a question: Would it possible for you to make some drawings or a sketch of the cooking handle for rebuliding purpose?

It would be great to hear from you.
Best, Alexander

Hi,
At this time your request is impossible. I am moving house, as in I am in rented accomodation at this time and my own house is being rebuilt, consequently all my collection is in storage for the duration and I don't even get to see it. Once the work on the house is done then I will be more than pleased to do drawings for you. Sorry not to be able to help at this time.
