Well here we go.... Started with a thought towards Michael J. then set it up and tried it out. Jbram and others your ammo reports ring true in my ears.... I picked up some ammo from a "friend" of mine a while back thought I was good to go for a while. Just found out it's """Yugo made for the Egyptians""" or so said... Thought it would work ok. Well it did sort of maybe. Found out that the mg42 works ok, but had 6 hit primers that did not fire. Also going to be reviewing a few things with the charging handle slot and a few other minor things. Well shot about 70 or 80 rounds of 8mm and it went ok. Then paintmanmatt offered some Romanian 8mm and it really liked that stuff... Ammo,,,, use the good stuff, ok I got it..... Then took the stuff out of the box and switched to .308, yes the barrel in the carrier was .308. Well loaded up a few rounds and it went super. I dropped a run of 15 NO problems, paintmanmatt and Jason ran a belt of 10 each no problems..... My mg42 likes that good .308.... Fired about 100 rounds .308
Looking forward to doing it again some time. THANKS again to paintmanmatt for the field setup.....
Ok, weapon report...
1st receiver was welded by Peter Stout (or so I was told)
2nd bolt redo was by panaceabeachbum firing pin by brp
3rd gripstick I think wiselite or panaceabeachbum not sure as I bought several from different folks
4th front anti air craft sight repo who ??
5th receiver is a long step sight area and MU 1944 and dfb with a post war West German marking
6th at this time a few yugo parts (I have the German parts to switch out now that I have test fired it)
7th all but the gripstick area is German.
8th lafette tripod was just bought at the creek and used first time, still needs more work then a take down and repaint later
9th fitting everything together well that was by me.... 42rocker
10th cotter pins, why yes there are several I could not see setting pins when I plan to take it apart so I can blue or park then paint over everything I'll set correct pins later
11th used a 13mm yugo nozzel, had a 11.5mm as a back up which I did not seem to need as ejection was fine,
12th safety note the 4th pic shows the wrong side to the weapon to be on.... However used starter tab to get to that point. Still needs 2 complete pulls of the charging handle before a round would be in the chamber.... If there was a lot of folks around then I never would have put myself in that position. Still makes a powerful looking picture.
Sorry do not have any pics of the .308 setup just the pic of the parts...
Now to try to upload the pics for all to see. I'll try to upload a video at a much later time...
Enjoyed the first shoot a lot....

Re: First shoot my mg42 42rocker
looks great ---it seems that the ammo is one of the biggest factors---gettting the 42 to run right
i'm glad you got it firing in both calibers---it looks great on the mount

Re: First shoot my mg42 42rocker
As Jbaum and others have said use the good ammo. I'm sure that if I had been firing full auto or even bump firing things might have been more interesting.
Thanks for the feed back.

Re: First shoot my mg42 42rocker
Very nice!!! I am glad to hear that the 308 worked so well. I picked up four 308 MG42 barrels with a kit at the SAR show in Phoenix this last weekend. I think my computer just got a new background picture.

Nice setup. It is amazing how much work goes into the proper setup to get these to fire.

Re: First shoot my mg42 42rocker
Next shoot I'll try to take a different lafette, one the has the optics block and bring a MGZ40 and try it that way.
Also looking forward in the next shot to firing from a bipod and also just for the fun of it from the hip.
Way to much fun, QUICK someone pass the ammo..... DA got any left over???
