For some odd reason, it bugs me that the rear legs are not swung forward into their holders.

MG42 legs

Post by gpp111 »

The Lafette was much more stable with the legs folded down than up. I tried both ways, and it was a more stable platform with this arrangement, though it certainly looked otherwise.

Also-with the legs folded up,the arc of fire is cut down, the lafette front will hit the folded legs. ---bil

I'm having a hard time visualizing this. The front leg can still be extended out and drawn in to add consioderable elevation. What part of the Lafette will hit the legs?

The legs do not fold under, there is a stop. They fold up,into the U shaped holders. In theat position, the front corners of the mount will hit the legs after a small amount of traverse. The cradle itself hits.If you like,I will try to get pics.Thanks. ---bil

You're right about the traverse limitation. Though, my mount only restricts travel by 5 mils on one side and 10 mils on the other....

legs

Post by gpp111 »

I tried setting the Lafette up a couple of ways. It wasnt the best position, being on the steps out of the trench, but with this arrangement for the Lafette, it gave great stability and a good field of fire. Practicality over looks. It was a pretty well hidden position as well.

With the legs folded up there was less stability and the field of fire was reduced. At this reenactment in the Great War trenches in Newville PA, we faced about 80 soviets in the opposite trench line.

Ivan would be in for a rude surprise if he decided to attack this position. Nothing like actual battle conditions to get the feel for your MG.

I just found out that you also cannot change the barrel with the legs folded up,you have to flip the leg back.I guess it would be ok in a tight position.I have been using mine as a work table for my SA,and it isn't too stable if the legs are folded. We need more re-enactment pics! ---bil

Here is a pic from last weeks Torrance Tactical. Two MGs in the photo. Wehrmacht prepares to defend the pig pen village from Allied assault. It is all in a days work. We are prepared for anything.
