How many people here, besides myself are Germans?

Post by woodco »

I was in a "international share" program that brought a lot of babies from adoption centers world wide. Aparenttly, a deal was worked out with my parents and they "imported :D " me from German.

Visit my dad in berlin, every few years.

Anyone else here of the same decent?

My family is from Austria and Poland, and we are Americans, and I am the last in my family that still speaks some German.

My Great Great Gandparents were germans that moved to russia to show them how to farm. When the russians started to round up the germans and execute them and that is when most of them moved to South Dakota. Where I grew up everyone was german and most still speak german russian. I know alittle but it was of no use when I was in Germany.

While also not as German as you “woodco,” I am about a quarter WASP who arrived in the 1750s (ironically they served in the Continental Army and fought “fjruple’s” Hession relatives in NJ) but PROUDLY I am three-quarters Germanic. My Germanic family came from various districts of Prussia before it was tragically terminated shortly after WW2.

“Woodco” is there still a building boom going on in Berlin, I was there several years ago and it seemed there were construction projects going in every direction?

I have my great grandfather's naturalization papers somewhere. He promised to obey the rules of this country, and not follow the Kaiser anymore... quite an elaborate piece of paper from the 1880's.

My Grandfather on my Dad's side, both passed on now, served under the Kaiser as a grunt in The Great War. He was captured sometime in 1916 and finished out the war in England as a PW. Went back to Germany but immigrated to the U.S. in 1932. Guess Ol' Otto saw the coming storm. He settled in a little speck of a town, Geddes, South Dakota. Me: 100% American of German heritage.

I don't know if I consider myself a German or not, but I was born in Germany while my dad was training over there for Vietnam. I think I actually have dual citizenships. Let me tell you when you need to get an original birth certificate, it's a real PITA!!

my grandfathers family was sent to poland the first time germany took it over to rule a provence, so most of my family is from the polish german border (sometimes it was germany sometimes poland), my grandmothers family is from the esat side of poland, so were not that german but my great grandfather spoke it when he arrived in detroit with his brother. and my mothers side is british that have been here since the 1700s, so id say im about 1/4 german if that.

Largely Bavarian-American (does that count?). Great, great grandfather Louis found himself in Paris for some reason, got into a duel (I assume he won) and fled to America.

Und ja, Ich spreche ein bissien Deutsche. Aber nicht so gut.

My Family traced the family name back to the early 1700s when the first Ancestor came over and was killed in an indian (feathers not dot) attack!

I also have a great great grand mother that came from Bavaria by herself at the age of 11. She spent the first five years of her life in the US as an indentured servant to pay for her passage! She also refused to let her children even learn German, not because of any hate for the fatherland, but because they were Americans now... things are sure different with the present crop of people coming to the US. :(

Old topic,,,, but thought that I would add my part. My Great grand Parents (on mother's side) came over from Dumroese, Germany about 1850's And Dad's great grandparents came over from Ireland about the same time. Since that time, American born and bred...
