Additonal MG 08 armor problems/pictures

Post by heckinohio »

I recently got another MG 08 on a sled, one I have had is ona Swiss mount. It came with several pieces of armor. I have had a terrible time trying to fit the armor on. I suspect it is repro after that was suggested; the hole for the scope seems to be on the wrong side!!!, which smacks of repro. And the bottom of an inner cut hits the leg of the tripod, the gun cant be elevated with the big piece on. I cant imagine WW 1 Germans goofing that. Best I can figure, the armor is only supposed to fit properly when the mount legs are folded in such fashion as to make it down flat on the ground. Up in the recreational shooter position, pictured, the gun is elevated to an extreme angle to just clear the bottom of the opening for the water jacket. I was going to modify it to clear everything needed on a gun standing up, the way I will display it or shoot it. Wife says.....'Whoa.....dont be grinding/cutting on that thing until you find out from someone who has one!!!" Hence this request......... Can anyone shed any light on the problems incurred shown by the pictures here??? Is the big piece not to be used with the water jacket cover??? PJHeck heckinohio@att.net

PJ,

Yeah I think it is repro too. Looks just like IMA repro armor. If you can take a close up picture of the Waterjacket armor where the shield meets the jacket armor. Also a picture of the way the front sights fits through the front armor. I am not sure which way the edges turn on the large shield but the cut for the barrel muzzle holder and and bump in for the waterjacket seem to be on the wrong sides for each other. Plus the brackets that hold on the main shield are screw on right? Germans almost surely riveted them on. I don't think there are any but certainly not more than a few large shields in the US that are original. I am fairly sure this is not one of them. Can you take a picture of the other side of the Sled front armor? The IMA version is not correct in the way it was shaped and so it obvious.

I would say the most correct way is with the camo forward.
