Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
What do you guys think a good price would be on this? I am not selling, I am buying. Is this a rare example?
Re: Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
A few years ago a very respectived collector gave me a great piece of advise. If you collect JUNK you will have a large collection. Over the past year I have purchased nine Maxim scopes all were in excellent condition, the most I paid was $150.00,one of the scopes was a new ZF12 n/A by C.P. Goerz. Dolf Goldsmith stated that he had only seen one in 50 years. This past year I turned down three because they were in sad shape. You have to believe that these things were made by the thousands and your example is far from great. Just because you haven,t seen one doesn,t make it RARE. Strive to collect the fine pieces and years down the road you will have a great collection. Cobra

Cobra, that is great advice but without well-cultivated networks it is tough to uncover those opportunities.

Re: Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
Cobra, I appreciate your advise and agree. That being said my purpose is a little different. I know Maxim items for the most part but I have no idea on the ZF12s other then the most common one. I was wondering more if this was one of the more "rare" styles of ZF12s or one of the more common.
As far as condition Its not that bad other then the paint. It will probably be going on a semi and so a repaint would not be a big deal. The optics are clear and good. A lot of the ZFs are missing the eye piece so even if this one is not great...
But the real point was to make sure I was not passing on a very rare example. I know there are several types that are hardly seen.
As far as the $150 for the most expensive one you have bought, well thats a hell of a good price. I tell you what I will be more then happy to buy one if its with its case for $300 which would double your money! If you have a really nice one in the good case I will do even better. Or if you have one to sell with no case, I am interested. Do you have any interest in selling? If so please email me with pictures and prices.

Many thanks for your kind offer but, I don,t sell any items that I acquire. All items acquired by COBRA go to museums or other art associations to enhance the knowledge of other people and their enjoyment.COBRA
Re: Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
Cobra, well that will work perfectly!!! I have a gun art Museum in my basement! I am "other people" and having one in person will surely "enhance" my "knowledge" and "enjoyment"! Plus I the items in my museum to largest gun range in Central Maryland and let other people shoot the guns and almost always for free! So just let me know what you want to donate and I will send my address. I can even cover shippingcobra wrote:Many thanks for your kind offer but, I don,t sell any items that I acquire. On a serious note, you know I don't really have anything against what you are doing but one of the great things about America is that we still have these items owned by the public and not just in museums. Of course you have every write to do what you want with your money/property. I guess its just that if more people do what you are doing, all this good stuff would get stuffed away in museums and then none of it could be enjoyed physically. Yeah seeing guns in museums is cool but there are tons of guns already in museums. I would rather see them out on the firing line, one time in my life and hopefully the owner would let me shoot it. That would beat 1000 times seeing it in a museum. Plus once it goes in, it will never come back out and will never again be shot by the public. That and many things in a museum are not well cared for or about by the staff or gets locked away out of public viewing because they have two or not enough space...

IMBLITZVT,Years ago I and a group of friends use to purchase military aircraft and donated them to different groups to fly at air shows and show the public how it was when we flew fighters in the airforce. Everything went well for a period of time until we saw a couple of our aircraft crash. We decided at that point to change to military items,Tanks, scout cars etc and weapons of all countries. Theses are now housed where all can see them and we don,t have to worry about them being destroyed. If a museum is closed the items go to the different military units here in the country. I appreciate you concept of a museum but, it is not ours. Thank you IMBLITZVT. COBRA
Re: Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
Matt, The Leitz scope is one of the more rare versions but it is not really rare. I see one for about every 6 or 7 busch scopes. I have one with its original paint and eyecup in excellent condition but it came with a bunch of other stuff so I cant comment on price. I bought a maxim that had examples of 5 different makers of zf12's an indirect fire sight and several other interwar optical goodies with it. I wouldnt pay any more for that scope than a busch one with the paint on it all things else being equal.
Re: Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
Ok, No, I don't think that the ZF12 scope pictured is a particularly rare variant or anything. It is less common than the Busch type of the same style, but its not the rare model. It's had the wire wheel put to it, and the leather eyepiece doesn't look good at all. There are better ones out there for the money, so no, I wouldn't do that.
On the other hand, I'd love to find examples today for what Cobra has found them for. That's about what I saw them sell for 10 years ago, but not now. I keep looking at them when I see them, but generally speaking, most of the ones I see for sale now are more expensive, and in worse condition than what I saw 10 years ago too. I don't think this guy is far off base on the price, but I'd expect it to be in much better condition for that money. What sort of shape are the optics themselves in? Clear? For that price, they should be really good, but what's been done to it has me worried...

Re: Is this Maxim scope worth $300?
Thanks everyone, I will keep looking.
I am looking for just a normal plain ZF12 in good condition. I was only interested in this one if it was very rare. So please keep an eye out for me or if anyone has one to sell, let me know!
Thanks!
