MG08 Sight Accessory

Hi All,
Have a look at the pics and see if you can tell me what is on this sight,it has some sort of sleeve fitted to the sight upright which slots into the grooves the sight slider runs in.Not something I have seen before and therefore am curious to know what it is and if it is a "factory" accessory or a field made one.
The gun is a NZ captured War Trophy Gun that has sadly been very neglected over the years!
