MG3

Post by JTravis »

Hey i am new to german MGs and want to get a MG3. I was wondering how much of a complete MG i could build with the parts off of robertrtg.com and what parts i would need a FFL to get.

The MG3 is different in a some receiver details from a WWII MG42; longer barrel recouperator housing which requires a different buffer and buffer assembly lockup bracket in the rear of the receiver; no AA spider sight mounting bracket on the top fornt of the receiver shroud. However, all other MG3 parts will fit up to a standard WWII style MG42 receiver, whether it is a semi or a full-auto, and many use these parts to change the caliber to .308.
If you buy a completed semi receiver from a licensed receiver builder, ready to drop in your parts, you will need to go through an FFL as it is considered a 'rifle" under federal law requiring a 4473 for purchase and transfer into your possession.
If you build the receiver yourself, then there are no restricted parts. You can buy all the receiver sections and all the proprietary semi-auto parts necessary to assemble a semi MG3 yourself. The are various makers of drop in semi auto grip assemblies, bolts and receiver parts as well as quite complete and user friendly plans for welding up a semi-auto receiver from torched parts kits. Google is your friend for info on these options.
For a full-auto MG3 you will have to possess a manufacturer's FFL (FFL07) and pay the special occupational tax (SOT2) for the privelege of building and registering restricted post-sample MGs. If you are an FFL licensee and pay the SOT, there is a factory MG3, restricted as a "pre-May dealer's sample' for sale for $30,000 at last look. Price might have come down a bit in the last couple weeks......good luck.
