See, stuff like this makes me wish I could get to see this book, but it doesn't circulate! Aargh!:

http://catalog.nypl.org/iii/encore/reco ... uite=pearl

Zeulenroda (Thueringen) : B. Sporn, 1937.

17 plates of pictures and 6 fold out maps, it would be neat to see this book, and see some writings and pictures from the original users, but I'm weird like that. :D

Thanks, P. Stout
What the heck storage bins are you looking in? :D I never ever seem to find anything that cool in a storage bin, unless I put it there! That's a really cool gun, I hope you get it fixed up. I'd love to see more pictures of your progress!

thanks for the inteprretation of the dates. I do know that the europeans put the month first, but the use of the periods and the hyphens didn't make sense to me at all.

I'll followup on the URL that you posted Glan and see what I can find. I haven't really researched the 1908 MG08 due to lack of time but with the advantage of the knowedgeable people on these boards, it just makes sense to start. The info posted here form David and Alpencorps has whetted my appetite, so onward and upward!

Hi Matt!

Your gun was carried by the 48th Infantrie-Regiment, aka the Infantrie-Regiment von Stülpnagel, The 5th Brandenburg Infantry, From Prussia. Their Garrison was at the old Prussian fortress of Küstrin. The 48th Infantry Regiment was a part of III Army Corps.

Ok,

How about this one, Its a luger. Is it WWI or post war Marking?

I am thinking of buying this for my first luger... need to know the background of the markings.

I'm going to guess that's a WWI era marking, for the 1st Machine Gun Kompanie of Infanterie-Regiment von Lützow (1. Rheinisches) Nr. 25, 35th gun. Is this a wartime dated Luger? The M.G.K. at the beginning of the war were expanded to be several compainies by the end of the war, usually armed with the MG08, with the gunners and officers armed with P08 Lugers and other pistols in addition to the MG08.

here's a picture of some guys from the unit on the road:

and another

Hope this helps!

Hi Matt!

Your gun was carried by the 8th Kompanie of the 48th Infantrie-Regiment, aka the Infantrie-Regiment von Stülpnagel, The 5th Brandenburg Infantry, From Prussia. Their Garrison was at the old Prussian fortress of Küstrin. The 48th Infantry Regiment was a part of III Army Corps. It looks like this may have been gun #2.

Hello imblitzvt,

I have a big big german book from 1919, with little story of all german regiments......i made a little research about your MG 08/15 from IR 48.
At the beginning of war this regiment was in the 5 th infantry division, in 1916, in the 113 th infantry division and since march 1917 in the 228 th infantry division. As your machine gun is from 1917, i print you only the composition of the 228 th ID.

And the area where the regiment was in 1917 and 1918

In september 1918, he was in my area lothringen means lorraine; it's the battle of saint-mihiel.......again usa

Best regards

David and Mark,

Thanks very much for the info! Very interesting! I like when these units fought the Americans! Makes me feel like I have a real piece of history in my hands, not just a stock piled gun part.

My MG08 sled is marked "JR 353.1.M.G.K."

Glen, Did you ever get that ammo can from the UK? I still need a latch for my can if you are breaking the can up for the handles?
