Anyone here get a chance to handle one yet and start to visualize if there is a way, yes w/o violating 922(r), to turn one into a .223 sporter?
I gather it would take some reconstructive surgery heavy reworking the bolt/FCG/springs/follower, etc…so it costs $500-$700 to do and $500 for the gun, $1k+ for an accurate looking Mp44 firing cheap .223 would be all right.
Any thoughts?

Call it mercy. I was saving him (and us) a LOT of Q&A sessions we have been through. If your really want a clone of the MP-44, you missed the boat since all the PTR-44's are sold, unless you can find one used, though it will cost about $5K. And even then, some of those guns had some bolt and bolt carrier cracking problems.
Well when the boat for the PTR-44 was here, a short stay at the dock as it were, I was too concentrated on finishing up the other builds, I was aware but a nice real Stg44 parts kit was 1/2 the price.
In realtime I remember reading the thread you had regarding your real Stg44 that you bought and all the work getting it right and I got spooked so I sold my Stg44 semi-project.
The thing getting a good receiver set is still not impossible, turning down a mauser 8mm barrel is totally doable, but then the price gets crazy on the things like: a handgaurd, the FSB-well pretty much everything you hang on the barrel, so it stood to reason if you could buy the GSG, cut it, gut it, maybe even dump the receiver and barrel, for the other parts if in correct proportion then it would be worth it. I have seen just Stg44 metal handguards sell for $400-$600.
That was where I was going, but anyway, it cannot be done, so as Otto von Bismarck would oft say, "und das ist das."

Well, my MP-44 was uniquely screwed up. Fellows who make rebuilt semi auto MP-44's often have an easier time with one. My friend Troy here in Minnesota has rebuilt many MP-44 semi's and restored full autos. He fixed mine. If you do not want to tackle a rebuild yourself, I highly recommend him. He has lots of experience with the MP/43/44/Stg-44 assault rifles. He goes by the name of TTETroy on GK43forum.com.
The GSG-44 departs so much in every aspect from the MP-44 that a conversion would be a MEGA-project, and the parts just won't be interchangeable to any useful degree. Maybe you could use the wood from the buttstock...
