Artillery/sharp shooting in Jersey, Channel Islands.

Post by Damien Horn »

Here's something some of you guy's may not have seen before. This is an edition of "Deutsche Inzelzeitung" which was printed here in Jersey, Channel Islands on the 11th of March 1942. It was a German/English daily newspaper for the British Channel Islands. I decided to submit it to the forum for no other reason than to show you the small notice headed "Scharfschiessen". This alerted the local population that the German armed forces Occupying the Island would be having artillery/shooting practice on Tuesday between 16 -18 hours at Fort Henry and in St.Ouen's and Grouville Bay on Tuesday and Friday between 9 and 17 hours. As well as on the 13th of March between 10-12 hours again at Fort Henry.
I guess this was in an effort not to alarm the civilians, as when some of the bigger guns were fired the whole Island shook and windows were broken. Something a little different for you to see, hope its of interest.

I'll pass that on to my son who can read German. He should enjoy it.

That's really cool, thanks for sharing! Did they re-do the whole page in English too?

Hi,
No unfortunately not.... don't forget we were Occupied and as such supposed to learn to speak and read German. They tried to teach it in the schools but it didn't work.

Wow, I did not know they tried to get everyone to learn German. Teaching it in school as a class I could see, (ok, it was taught as a class in my schools from Elementary on) but trying to get the older adults to learn that new of a trick would seem to be Quixotic at best... with that kind of thought process, one can see why the 1000 year reich only lasted 12!

You have some fantastic stuff there, and some rich history! I'm glad to see you are free to own guns there too, you have some wonderful things! Wish England's laws were the same!

Of course they would teach it in school-they intended the entire world to operate in German! I think they expected to be there a while! ---bil
