Michael J's build #2
Okay, well i went through quite a bit of effort to import these, including a 3rd-party exporter and some inquiry with the RCMP and CFC (canadian firearms center), if you are curious you may be able to track down my inquiry, it is #7102 dated 2009-06-08 (june 8th). Disregard "remington", i have no clue what that came from
. Seeing as I did not title my inquiry, the person working there probably just used the first gun-brand name that came to mind...

Re: Michael J's build #2
As you can see, the stampings must be trimmed before welding. Beautiful quality i must say though, i am impressed. I must refrain from saying whose stampings these are, just in case they would prefer not to be mentioned, but i'm sure a little research will provide you with the answer (there is only really one company selling them like this
).
So, this is my 2nd build, the first receiver (IMA reweld) ended up being a dummy! These however should be perfect for my semi auto. Looks like a lot of work to be done, but nothing i cannot handle with time and a little effort

Re: Michael J's build #2
Ive built the rear section of those. Let me know if you have any questions
Re: Michael J's build #2
Congrats Mike nice to see you finally got a set ... watching this closely & I have a friend that used them as well his gun works great .... Good Luck

Re: Michael J's build #2
Thanks guys, the sole purpose of this thread is because i can guarantee you i will need help in some way or another
. I'll be sure to post as many pics as i can to document my progress, but i won't really be able to start until probably september-october ish. Until then, i'll just prep the parts and start taking measurements. I got a real nice booklet / manual that i will be using, with some rough blueprints showing me measurements.
They do not have this advertised on their site i believe, but i got all you see for $700 (all the small parts including the AA base pretty much installed + stampings). I don't know if this deal is still going on, but i'm pretty sure i got $200+ in small parts for free. I highly recommend anyone who is thinking about buying their stampings to do so while this deal is still on!
Flemgunner, when (not "if" ) i run in to trouble, i'll send a pm your way
!
I'll try to set this up as a tutorial while i do it, including the best method of order of how to do things, as soon as i figure out what that is. I'm trying to decide whether or not to install the rails prior to welding the rear, or after, as my rails are pre-drilled. I'll fool around with it sooner to september!
If any of you want a more detailed picture, or close up, do let me know.

Re: Michael J's build #2
Flemgunner, or anyone else who has experience with these stampings in particular, how do the rails sit in the receiver? Am i correct in placing the ends of the rails at the ends of the rear stamping, or is it further up?
I plan to do mine slightly differently when it comes to rail installation. I figured (as both my rails match drill holes) that i would drill the side with the recup first. Then weld the two stampings, and use the drilled holes as pilot holes for the 2nd rail drilling. I'll also probably have to make up a wooden jig to ensure the rails are lined up too, but that won't be an issue.
Just a thought anyways... So will this work, any comments?
edit: i plan to do the "D-holes" before welding the two halves together also, just seems easier to me.

Re: Michael J's build #2
I may be wrong i never used these but Hey mike its a little early in the build to be placing the rails in if you do & they are not aligned with the bore your Fu-k-ed get it all together & the camming section in place then worrie about rail placement that would be my suggestion for what its worth

Re: Michael J's build #2
thats a good point you present... hmm , back to the drawing board
thanks rocco

thanks rocco
Re: Michael J's build #2
Michael-if you do it like Rocco says, with the camming section done, and you can mount the camming piece,I have one of those rail alignment jigs you can use.I have never tried it,it has a section that goes into the barrel bore, and two blocks that the rails fit into. What you do after that is anyones guess, this thing just makes sure the bore and rails are on the same axis.Someone must know more about how to use it,I thought it was part of a vending machine the last time I found it!

Re: Michael J's build #2

Well i won't need it for definitely a few months Bil, but when that time comes around i'll give you an email or something. My only real issue is that i will be drilling blind, unless I either:
1) buy new undrilled rails
2) weld my rails shut, and re-drill them (most probable unless this presents an issue?)

Re: Michael J's build #2
I had a hell of a time getting my rails lined up. I had to redo them twice as I drilled a little off.
You will want to do all your cutouts for your buffer before you weld it together I wouldnt even attempt tp do it after. Your first thing (at least what I did first) is to find out how much of the stampings you need to cut off to get the width right. You will probably find you will need to cut off some of the metal in the top for the bolt roller as well.

Re: Michael J's build #2
Yeah i checked that out today. I am just going by what I remember from my IMA reweld, and the top looked way too skinny after mocking the rear up to the correct width. I have a strong feeling that the rails are gonig to be a mega pain in 3-4 months when i get started with them... Also, i have read and re-read your tutorial, i will be sure to do the same process instead of experimenting
. Looks like the order you did it in worked out well, so i will stick with what works. Your thread has already saved me, as i completely forgot about the buffer area needing to be ground!
As for today, as i do not have the machine shop access, i took the time to finish my stock! Lets just say I like it, and that's all that matters
...
First off: Brass wire wheel to the entire thing, it left it with a course finish. Well actually it reminds me of a walnut (the nut, not the wood), you can feel the "wrinkles", but it is smooth. It goes with the grain, to give it a rough look, despite the fact it is not actually rough. It even changes color in the light when i move it around!
Secondly: I applied two coats of wood stain, a Sedona Red (222) or something.
Lastly: A coat of Mink Oil to make it waterproof, and i let it dry out in the sun. Okay you are probably like "wtf is he doing", but in my defense, it was all i had! I hope it worked

Re: Michael J's build #2
I like the colour, but i think i have got to sand it down properly and re-re-finish it
. I'm too lazy right now, i'll do that another day.

Re: Michael J's build #2
You do know were sedona is right ??
Hey Mike dont sweat the rails .... I have a solution for them get the channels cut for the buffer first & width of reciever spot on first we can cross that bridge when we come to it with the rails & hey I have never been to Canada sooo I may just need a Vacation by the Time your ready .... Owe wouldnt that be a trip
.... Hey do they mind 300 lb Brits there

Will do, for the stampings, sounds like a plan "deal with it later"

Re: Michael J's build #2
Sedona Red is not named after a color,it is sort of like Panama Red,you smoke it!
