Who actually has a homebuilt MG42 that runs?

Post by MG34_4_ME »

Hi guys!
New to the site and was wondering if anyone has ever built a semi MG42 and got it to run reliably?I want to build one but dont want to get into something over my head.I know you can buy them but they are pricy even have heard of one manufacturer of having little problems with them.If a manufacturer cant get them to run right we could have more problems that we can tolerate,IMO.Anyone have one that they built from a parts kit and how much of a pain in the A$$ was it? :?

Yes I have a fully functioning SA42 convertible for 308 and 8mm with just a bbl change and feedtray swap. Yes it did have teething problems. Yes I found out alot of little things along with Larry to make these run.
I have blown the hell out primers, had some bad ammo and one belt that it does not like whatsoever. I have shot the cheap Indian to the Australian and Portugeese, Lake City for the 308's, 8mm is usually Romanian and some hand loads I did in the past.

I built it in a short time frame I cannot how many hours 50-60 maybe but remember I have all the equipment the world to build it, went thru the firing pin issue also but not because of the buffer the firing pins were not hard enough.

Never had any trigger or hammer issues as far breakage, just some nasty trigger slap on the first but that was fixed along time ago.

Screech (MB) I'll be sending you a glassbeaded part shortly to try in your park tank, otherwise your extensions are done just waiting for the last of your freinds parts to show. GR

Hi, I'm new here... I have a running home built. It can be a bit finicky, it feeds and runs fine, but the AR-15 trigger group is not a good match for this gun. The AR hammer spring doesn't have enough poop to fire the primers in any of the surplus 8mm ammo I've tried. The Aussie 308 runs fine, as does the malaysian 308.

Here's a pic of the MG42 next to the transit chest I built for it:

cwtoyotathe Wolf power spring is the only way to go, it will pop most primers except the really old surplus with the really hard primers. Brownell's in Iowa has them the cheapest that I have found.
