Suberb Kit From Angola

Post by propos »

Yseterday, I received my 42 kit from Dan. Fast delivery. All I can say is WOW! I've spent several hours pouring over the parts. Whoever torched the receiver knew what he was doing. The guy must be a surgeon on the side. The receiver was made by Gustloff in 1944. It has the white finish. Somewhere I read that the finish is called Bonderizing. This is the closest I have ever been to a real MG-42. Before, I drooled over and looked longingly at them at gunshows. Now, however, I actually can handle one. Boy, this was better than Christmas. I kept pulling wrapped parts out of the box. I finally got all of them unwrapped and laid out on the floor.

Then I started to fit this piece to that and that piece to this, etc. Thanks to the information here I was able to figure out which part was which. Pretty neat the way this thing goes together. Clever Germans. I will still have to get a manual as there are some parts I have no idea what they are. What is a "Deckel, Staubschutz". and where does it go? Some of the parts are on backorder, like the bipod. But I can wait as this is going to be a long term project. Probably won't finish it until this summer. I promised my wife I will finish remodeling the laundry room. Got to keep her happy as she tolerates my hobby. She saw the parts laying on floor and didn't really say anything. She's Russian and appreciates the finer things in life...like firearms. :D

In examining the parts, I only found one bad part. The barrel bearing. It has a crack in it from the cutout to and past the upper lug. I have a call into Dan and I'm sure he'll make it right. As it is some of the parts are new and most have very little wear. Absolutely worth every penny. This is a dream come true for me. Sure, it won't be a FA, I can't afford one anyway, but I can have an SA. I've had a "you know what" on for an MG-42 before I even knew what a "you know what" on was. Too many war movies when I was a kid I guess.

Once I figure out how to take pictures with my wife's digital camera and then figure out how to post pictures, I put them on the site. I intend to take pictures of every part of the build. As it is, this kit looks like the other kits that have been posted here. Hey Pirate, can you do another gripstick mod? And a bolt mod? I hope to be doing business with you soon.

Edited to add: Just got done talking to Dan. I wanted to let him know how pleased I was about the condition of the kit. Hell of a nice guy. It is always a pleasure to talk with him. And he said that he will replace the barrel bearing. What a guy!

Yep, Dan is definitely the parts kit man. Great guy to deal with. He sends you what is advertised, no BS ratings like other, cough, cough, IO, places...

I got my Dan kit last night and its a beauty! Who does the wrapping? My God, now I believe that I'm not buying junk. I'm getting Geek up also. I have an IO kit and its not too bad, definitely not in the same class, but I think , it will be my practice run.

I got my kit from Dan today. WOW it is worth the price! I would be willing to bet the reciever was never parked, blued, painted, or any other coating to prevent rust. This reciever is in the white. The cuts are in the best places possable. This is a very doable weld job. Some of the parts are new in the wrap. Cleaned the cosmoline off the reciever and removed a little slag. Damn, this kit makes me goose bumpley all over. If anyone didn't get one of these kits you missed out :D :D . Hats off to you Dan. I'm happier than a pig in poop.
