Need help on riveting

I am going to install my rails on the receiver. I have never riveted before, but I have a few questions. First, do you put the head of the rivet on the inside, (inside the rails? ) or the outside? I have purchased a rivet gun, the bucking bar and the rivets. I have tried several on a scrap metal, but I can not form the head. What am I doing wrong?

Use your search button on this website as DA has done several nice posts on how to set rivets in a mg42.
Normally the rivet head is inside the rail and supported by a "bucking screw" (see rtg website for pic) and the rivet is set from the outside slowly. Good Luck, I don't enjoy setting rivets myself. Also check rivet setting on the 1919a4.com website if you need more info.
