M1-Dan's Build in Progress!

Well i finally decided to get cracking on the boxes taking up room in my apartment. I have the sear lugs ground off on the bolt and prepping it for the retracting handle piece. I picked up a couple things at homedepot last night for the build a square for cutting the shroud for welding, 3/8" steel rod, and some copper! Im hoping to get my receiver welded up soon, and hoping to get the Pirate Cam section welded to the shroud today on my Lunch Break. Put the IMA receiver together and bolt the rails in for bolt fit.

Noticed the bolt was tight going in and it would hit the screw heads, I ended up taking the shops Porta-Power nd putting a wedge spreader attachment on it then inserting that into the receiver. Ill tell you didnt take much to open it up 10 tons of force is nice for sheet metal. Planning to get some progress done today as long as i dont have much paint work today! Pics to be posted when i get home from work.

Well got the cam section tacked in and looks good. I just tryed the barrel in with the camming piece, Is the barrel supposed to fit in tight in the barrel door area when you install it ? Mine was tight but it fits , figure if its not supposed to be tight i can just file some down. Here some pics, and got a bipod from Kurt on here , looks awesome. Hoping to weld the rest of it tomorrow.

Very nice, just a question, how did you remove the old barrel bushing from your shroud? I have been working from the back of the gun, to the front, so i haven't got to the point of cleaning up the front yet. I don't think i have any drill bit that large to just drill it out, and i'm not sure how it is welded in, so i don't know where to grind to disconnect the welds.

Michael Look where i cut mine it wasnt welded in that area. I do Autobody for a living so i took my die grinder with cutoff disc and went around it. Cut off nice and clean and then the rest of the bushing i smacked out with a hammer .

It sure is cold up here had freezing rain yesterday, im the painter at the shop so i was painting in the booth with burner on at around 70 degrees. ITs nice while everyone else freezes in the shop haha!

I've taken one out last week, I'll be doing another one this week.... I'll post photos in a separate post, I used four tools.... Bench grinder to break up the old slag, Hammer and punch to "turn" the booster, and a dremel tool to make one quick cut through it to pop it out. Chris....

well i cleaned up the inside slag with my deburr tool. Ground my screw heads so the bolt can slide through the rails, question on the rails i noticed on each one that one part is thicker than the piece below . Does it matter how it is in the receiver or not. Also how easily should the bolt slide i got it now so that when it slides it moves free but it hits part of the receiver and stops ,easy fix i assume. Gonna test fit the recouperator then hopefully tack the pieces in tomorrow on my lunch break.

The thin piece on the top was machined to fit the groove in the receiver that your feed try sits on. The thin part should be on the top.

The thin section of the rail is to clear the recuperator,on the bottom left.I think on the postwar and yugo both bottom rails are thinner.If I am wrong,someone please correct me! ---bil

Hmm that makes sense, both my rails are machined on the bottom i think though...

Dan, just try fitting the rails. i don't see an issue if everything fits however you install the rails. ONLY if everything fits though, chances are, install the recup, and it may only fit a certain way.

Well got the front and middle section from my IMA receiver tacked in and bolt block welded inplace. Need to do the rear piece and take the old rachet plate off have it drilled but a few welds are still holding it. Hope to get the rest tacked in and welded up a little better. to hold it together good.

Ok got all 3 pieces tacked together and will show some pics. Have a question of some major improtance. After they got tacked i test fit the grip retainer and the holes are off by 1/16 of an inch or so. I can line up the 3 holes in front but the back one that hold the part down for the recup. is off. The rails are all measured and fit fine in the tacked pieces. Could it be that the grip retainer the original one was off in length? I will post pics in a bit.

This is like de ja vu all over again. my 3 front line up good, but even after my 2nd cut and reweld, i'm off by 1/16! Everything fits nice, until after i'm done welding! It shouldn't make a difference, just make sure your buffer still fits, and that the rails aren't bumping into that. I don't see how the bolt traveling 1/16 less distance is going to mess you up . The 1/16 is most likely shrinkage, although maybe the dimensions of the yugo, and original vary slightly? Just be sure to grind a small amount off of that thing that holds your recup. from sliding backwards (about 1/16) to compensate. Its what i plan to do anyways.

I was thinking of welding the retainer on as that is what BRP does .

Early rails had only one thin side,lower left side.Later they both were thin on the bottom. ---bil
