Build/Rebuild recouperator??
Anyone have any handy hints on reassembling the recouperator. Which way do the three flat head post go..small one nearest top??? How about how to best hold the spring down enough to let the "washer" slide through the tube???? Tools???? This thing is driving me NUTS (short drive I KNOW....) My thumbs are blistered....I ready to chunk it...

the front nut goes into the recuperator with the long side facing towards the buttstock. you insert the last spring in the end of the recuperator rod, then the plunger follows the spring, then the nut goes into the recess cut into the side of the plunger , when this is done the short side of the nut is pushed by the plunger under pressure from the spring forward (towards the trunnion) into the recuperator tube, securing the assemble,...barely.

Oh Salavating One...thanks...
I have two LONG plungers/flat head rods, one short. Is the short rod the first one in the tube or the last???????? I know how the unit attaches to the rec'r, but the the whole dang thing is disassembled and a real Muther F*&^er to get back together. I'm trying to save myself some trial and ERROR!! Does the final return plunger (the big plunger with the milled flat spot) have it's OWN spring or are there just springs for the THREE captive plungers????? Questions, Question, Questions....

4 springs total. Short plunger postioned at rear of the recuperator. Assembly sequence is always spring, plunger (with round disc area pointing forward), retainer - of course the most forward spring/plunger is retained by the "L" shaped screw. As you're building up the stack, compress each assembled spring/plunger combination and slide in retainer thru adjacent side slot in recuperator tube. A small screw driver inserted thru both sides of slot and into the spring coils can be used to compress the stack in order to slide in each retainer.
Caution - never point recuperator towards your face (or other living objects you might value) as things can tend to come apart and fly out of the recuperator tube during assembly attempts. Point open end of recuperator towards a wall such that you can easily recover the flying parts if you loose compression on springs during retainer installation attempts.

Thanks Otis,
One of the 4 springs is too FAT to fit the tube.. might be the rear sight spring, I need to check. NEXT and last question...Should the large milled plunger be able to fully depress?? Mine does not. The L bolt is facing the rear of the rec'vr so it is NOT the culperate...
Otis...
I'll buy you a drink of SHINE when Darla gets back in town...Of course, if Ernest T. comes with her, you might get DEPUTIZED and we all KNOW you wouldn't drink on DUTY!!!!

I'd be willing to bet you bought your recuperator from Dangerous Dan at Angola Armory. All springs should be same diameter and easily slide down recuperator. If it was Dan, send him an e-mail and he'll gladly send out a replacement spring - pronto.
No, it will not fully compress - the L bolt will act as a stop and not allow full compression - you don't want full compression. Barrel doesn't need to travel very far aft for bolt rollers to unlock. BTW - if you ever put in the L-bolt backward such that the leg is facing forward the barrel does not have enough rearward travel to unlock the rollers before it hits the L-bolt.
Recuperator is really not too bad to assembly once you get the hang of it - guess it's like a lot of things.
PS - can you believe that dog gone Opie Taylor is a bald old man already - sure am glad I haven't aged one bit thanks to TV Land and White Lightening.

Thanks for the info..I was gonna open up the Shine if I had to take this thing apart again... Yes, it is a Dangerous Dan product! Nice kit, the torch guy turned up the wick a little too high on the rear section and burned a BIG hole. It'll have to to have a small chunck of steel cut to fit the filled and shaped. Other than that it's nice.
Everytime I see the old RFD crew on TV I CRINGE...Barney, Andy, Opie....Goober is the only one who still looks (and acts) basically the same! I thinkhe ran for public office a year or two ago.
Thanks for the info, I'll contact Dan tomorrow.

I'm having a time with this %*#% too.
Once assembled and inserted into the receiver, the forward end has the threaded nipple projecting out to the left side.
Does this nipple go through the hole on the left side of the receiver? When I put it there the whole thing destructs and shoots the spring and plunger out the front.
I've got a nut that could fit, if the threads weren't buggered, either a bolt that looks like it should hold the recoup down through the base of the receiver or fit the little threaded nipple at the end of the recoup. Where does this nut go?
Thanks for your help.

ok, if you got the front bolt in backwards it will not fit the rec. correct, the bolt goes through the side of the rec. then the nut goes on it, I ran a tap on mine think it was like 6mm threads? the rear bolt you can use somethin small from the hardware store with a nut also, there is a pic here to show how the front bolt goes into the recoup

Okay John. I've got your other book -- they should be labeled pre and post creation. That's before and after the big bang!!
And for the next poor soul in these uncharted waters:
Both the recuperator attachment points; one at the front integral with the last retainer and the other a bolt running through the bottom of the receiver are threaded 5mm-.8.
