Military Radio

Post by salt6 »

I've got an R442 Aux radio coming. It will be inop so I want to put an mp3 player in it. The goal is to set it up to use the orginal speaker, volume control and power switch from the radio.

Can anyone point me to someplace with any info on this type of conversion?

Thanks,

I have a client that was in the store today that does real radio repair work. Next time that I see him I'll try to bring up this topic and talk to him about it. That said it might be a few weeks as he only stops in about once a month. Will try.
As a side note I asked if he had worked on the radios of some of the WW2 planes and he said that he had worked on B-17's and B-24's and B-25's but not any B-26's. An rate he is one of the old guys that they don't teach anymore.
Good Luck, Please keep us up to date on this project.

I though I'd document my attempt to convert a R442 Aux radio. My plan is to use the shell to house another type of player and use the external speaker for the sound.

This is the display reciever my wife gave me for Christmas. She got it from Pvt Jarhead.

The shell,

The guts that came with the reciever,

This is the first part for the conversion,

More to come but I suspect this will be a slow project.

Next questions.

1. If I can get the power down enought to run, say an ipod, can I hook it up to an external speaker?

2. Can the external speaker be powered for more volume?

3. Can any ipod, etc, be set up to start playing when it receives power on?

Well made a little progress.

Here is the gutted speaker with the stand offs.

Nice little diagram on the inside of the back cover.

Here is the cheap 4 inch speaker I picked up at Wal Mart.

Needed to make some stand offs so I used some Bi-fold door pivots cut to size. Install these after the grill.

Hand to make a small adjustment to the grill to allow the front of the speaker to fit.

Clearence for the back cover.

Speaker installed.

Ok, I decided to go stereo. So I picked up another aux speaker. Hooked both up and gave it a try without changing the speaker and it work but it was not very loud, 2 watt speaker vs 150 watt speaker.

I'll post some photos of the wiring later.

Also picked up some mometary switches to try and fab up a new remote for the face plate.

Update, got the second speaker done. Same as the first. I was able to heard sound on the orginal speakers but it was not really lound.

To wire up the back of the speaker jack you will need to wire into the black and gray wires (red arrows). If you want stereo cut the jumpers, grey and black (yellow arrow) and wire to each jack. That's what I did.

Image

On the left side of the mount power plug are three holes in a triangle. The two stacked one above each other supply the power to the 24v to 12 converter. This will then supply power to the amp.

24 volts in and 12 volts out.

The amp recieving power.

Just need to tuck it the radio to finish.

Pretty much got this one done. Decided to go stereo so cut the jumpers on the audio out on the aux and wired them up for left/right. Here's a video and the music is from the system.
