Good work so far on your mock up! If you can, try to replace the front grill and lights, as that and the gas tank fill spot you welded up are the two most notorious tattletales to CJ2s masqueradeing as a WW2 jeep. The windshield also is a tell tell sign, as the civie windshields had the embossed WILLYS on them and are higher than the WW2 ones, and the top will not fit right with the civie windshield on it.
Ford jeeps up to around april 1942 had an embossed FORD on the left rear panel of the jeep. After that they did not have it on the body. F marks are not on every part, as some parts were contracted out to other companies, however a majority of parts did contain the F marks on the GPW (Designation for the Ford WW2 jeep).
I own a 1942 Ford GPW, Date of Delivery Oct 1st, 1942. I got it for $1500.00 in 2001. I have currently about $5000.00 in it as seen in my pictures, without the cost of the 1919s and other weapons. A real WW2 jeep can be expensive or inexpensive, it just depends on how hard you look for one. The bonus is that the value of the real WW2 jeep will continue to climb year after year.
If you do a search for D&L Bensinger on yahoo.com, you'll find his Reproduction parts for sale. He has grilles and lights etc, basically everything you need to make your CJ look darn near spot on. The only things you cannot hide are the lack of glove compartment, the tool box arrangement and tub, and the tranny hump, as they have T90 trannys instead of T84s like WW2 jeeps. The BEST resource on the planet for WW2 jeeps is http://www.g503.com
- check it out, it's got everything you'd ever want to know about the subject as well as info on later jeeps, both civie and military.
