MG-42 Carry Handle (Pic)

I put a carry handle on my 42 today, along with some decent wood grips.

Still need to refinish the rest of the gun though.

I always thought a carry handle like the FAL's would be a nice addition. Looks Great.

The damn thing is so heavy, I just thought it would be a bit more convenient to have a handle on it.
I just took the buttstock, which I thought was bakelite and sanded it down a few minutes ago. Turns out that it is wood underneath all that dark brown hard plastic coating. Stained it and it looks a lot better.

Kit was a Centerfire M53. The gun runs like a scalded dog.

I guess the germans thought the same about lugging it around, and used the strap. Though
I do see pics of guys with it slung over the shoulder.
Those grips are very, very nice looking. How did you do them?

A buddy of mine turned the carry handle wood on his lathe, since I only have metal working equipment.

But on the grips, I had some wood left over from my days of making 44 Auto Mag grips, so I just took a slab of that and traced out the profile using the bakelite grip as a template. Cut it on my vertical band saw (has a metal cutting blade) then just shaped it by hand with a big rat tail file. Sanded it a bit and threw some red mahogony stain on them.

Ok, I am placing an order for one of those handle thingies and a pair of grips!. That looks so-damn-good!

.I am sure the handle pivots from side to side?.

I have the handle balanced about 3/4 up in that pic. It will fold down on either side. When folded left, it sits on top of the forward feed guide of the feed tray, just above where the incoming ammo would strike it. On the right, it sits on the barrel release latch with the back of the handle just forward of where the empty belt exits the gun.

In order to attach it to the gun, I welded a long barrel nut to the back of the rear sight spring housing, then just screwed the rod into it. When you swivel the handle back and forth it just rotates a 1/2 turn on the threads.
It's an M53, so I am not sure if the MG42 has the same rear sight setup or not.

tony, you need to make a set-up that "attaches" to the gun with no welding, they will sell!!!

tony where you have the handle mounted is where the rear aa site finger goes

Yeah, that's what I thought, but on the M53 that I have, there is no AA site finger nor a provision up front to mount the spider web.

if you go on the rtg site you will see the mg3 spider, it mounts in front of the rear sight

The spider web sight normally mounts right here at the "X", correct?

As you can see, you're not going to mount it there without a TiG welder.

yes thats where the ww2 spider goes, the mount for the ww2 is riveted there, the mg3 spider mounts farther back sort of clips on the rec. http://www.robertrtg.com/mg3aasight.html

My lathe has been down since last week, but should be back on-line tomorrow. I am going to build a new quick detachable carry handle assembly that snaps into the holes that are in the side of the rear sight channel. It will just have two spring loaded plungers like a toilet paper roll spindle with the CH coming off of that. No welding required with the new design.
