Questions on MG34 accessories

Postby maddog51 » Mon Jun 06, 2016 12:32 pm

On the mg34 canvas receiver cover there is clip/clasp, of different mfg. & designs. But they are all to clip on something. Anyone have a clue on what it was used for?

Also on the mg34/42 drum basket, on the side close to the cover hinge, there is a rectangular metal loop of some sort. Does anyone know what that loop was used for?

And last the mg34 broken shell extractor, this one is of Yugo mfg.
I have different ones for different Rifles, 1919a4/6, etc., and never needed to use any. But one time out, I over greased my reloads for the M1 Grand, in which did not eject. I used their tool with the prying end to get under the rim and remove the spent round. The Yugo shell extractor has one end with the same type of prying tool.

I know that if you blow off the bottom casing with rim that you'll need the other business end. By inserting it in the shell and pulling the broken shell out. My question is, how is the other end used? How does it grasp the shell casing?

Hopefully I described the areas well enough that you guys of vast knowledge can give me some clue . With the drum's loop or canvas receiver cover, I doubt that in my shootings at the range, that I would ever need foe whatever there for. But they say knowledge is the greatest tool and I'm just wondering if anyone knows .

But on the shell extractor, give me all the info that I would need to know.

Thank you all

RE: drum basket loop. The end of the starter tab sticks out of the small narrow slot in the door, and the tip of the tab is hooked under the loop to restrain it.

There are a few different types of ruptured case extractors. Show us a picture of the one you're talking about and we'll go from there.

Thanks jbaum,
Holding down the belt starter tab....DUH!!! I had no clue. Something like that just amazes me on how a designer/engineer installs detail that how many other people today would know. Thanks for that info.

Here is the pic of what my Yugo broken shell extractor and canvas receiver cover looks like, but copied from the web. They are not mine, but they are what I have.
On the cover you'll see the clip on the smaller end that goes around the barrel shroud.

Thank for any info..

I doubt that your broken shell extractor would work for an MG34 barrel. The chamber face is recessed in the barrel extension, and it would be difficult to use that type of extractor for a cartridge that still has it's base.

Below is a link to a real MG34 ruptured case extractor. It works inside the barrel extension for cases that have the base still intact, and for the ones with the base torn off.

The same style tool is also made for the MG42, but the pins are in different locations to work with the different barrel extension of the MG42.

I learn something new everyday.
Here is the site I bought it from BRP in the gunner's kit.

http://www.brpguns.com/categories/Parts ... cessories/

And a picture of the kit. This kit has the wrap still on it, but you can make it out it's in the loop of the strap.

Thanks again for your info.

Yugo for sure, but Yugoslavia didn't make MG34's or kits that I know of. More likely is that it's for the M53, for which that shell extractor would work.
