75 round saddle drum.

Post by pitfighter »

This is probably a newbie question - I am an MG42 newbie (less than six months), so not particularly worried, lol.

I have found a 75 round saddle drum in very nice condition - old gun store.

Will this mag fit on the MG42?

I have an MG34 too, but it is a dummy, so the drum would be for display only.

I believe I need a specific top cover, to go with the saddle drum?
The saddle mag unfortunately does not include the top cover.

I have a number of 50 rd assault drums, which work great.

Thanks,

Pit.

The double drum magazine was not used on the MG42. There are different double drums for other guns.

The most commonly found double drum is for the MG15. It will have FL46300 stamped on it for the MG15 as Luftwaffe issue. There is also an MG13 double drum (an odd looking, one drum up, one down device).

The real prize is a genuine double drum for the MG34, which is worth a few thousand bucks. Really.

I love Bergflak's site - I didn't know he had a section on the MG34 saddle drum application - very interesting reading. Thank you for directing me to it.

Here is my saddle drum - it does have all the missing parts in the box, that are not in the photo, screws, latches etc.,
It seems too nice to be old, to me, what the learned opinions here?

It works, and that is important - lol.

Just make sure to keep them oiled, or they can get rusty...

There you have a mg15 double drum. Value between $250 and $400, who where etc. I bought one and a repro top cover and used it for some display pics. It really does look good. That said not really planing to shoot it at this time. I'll wait till I'm older, LOL... Those double drums really do look good.

Not recent - through a trade, moons ago, I believe it originated as a hand picked item from IMA - along with the MG15 kit it came with.

I'm looking for a mg15 parts kit if you have any interest in selling that is. PM if interested.
Not really interested in the 2nd double drum, a little to much rust. Still cool looking.

C'mon a drop of oil and some wire wool, and that saddle drum would be good as new! 8)

There is a watercooled MG15 kit for sale at IMA - mine is not for sale, thank you, for the interest, regardless.

As of last weekends 10% off ima sale there is one less mg15 water cooled in their inv. and my credit card debt is now larger. Still have an interest in an air cooled one, however.
With the double drums normally around $300 at the creek I might not be interested in trying to use a little oil and steel wool on that one. Might be cheaper to buy, this time.
Thanks for the breakdown pics.

$295 on another site - I may have to drag another one into the inventory.

One never knows when I may have to defend my Fokker from a Sopwith Camel assault!
Got to be ready.

I have also heard that an MG13 mag can be made to fit in the Mg15 with a little fitting.

Congratulations on the purchase, BTW.

I do not foresee these kits devaluing with time - on the contrary, I see them becoming more valuable.
