Removing barrel cam

How do you remove the pin that holds the cam to the barrel? Does it simply punch out, or do you drill it out, or what?

Then how does the cam separate from the barrel?

I want to remove a cam from the stub of an 8mm barrel and install it on a barrel chambered in .308.

Hi Bryan,
The MG34 Barrel-Extension is removed by first, removing the pin (if used)........the pin is installed and then flair out on both ends so that it won't move during firing. Either use a smaller pin-punch to tap it out (to be able to re-use it)....or drill the end out and then punch out the pin.

The barrel-Extension is then screwed off as a standard thread pattern (counter-clockwise off.....clockwise on).

If not reusing the retaining-pin.......use a "Dremmel-tool" and make a small notch on the contact-surface between the barrel-body and barrel-extension is that once re-installed, you can center-punch the barrel at the notch so that it won't back-out.

Sorry for the tardy reply, the cut barrels with extensions just arrived today. As instructed I punched out the retaining pins with little difficulty.

Thinking about trying some strap wrenches to unscrew the extensions.

I have taken several of these apart (when needed) during the manufacture of 2-pcs. Blank-Barrel-Assemblies.
Other things that you can try are a heavy-duty vise with good/curved clamps to prevent the vise's jaws from cutting the barrel's outside surface......like good "Barrel-Blocks".

Heating of the barrel-extension slightly sometimes assists (with a couple drops of penetrating-oil) ...... but often it is just a good strap-wrench (or even a large adjustable wrench) that will break the extension loose from the barrel. Once loose, they just spin off by hand.

In extream cases, I have used a brass-drift and BFh (large hammer) to smack the flats of the barrel-extension to assist in loosening it up.

Here are some pictures. Pins are out, but haven't gotten them unscrewed yet. 'tis a pity the barrels were torched, there are some nice markings on them.
