Hey guys- I have a question regarding finish on late mg34’s. For example a dot 1945 that by serial number is early enough to have been produced wartime and shows no post war markings but is phosphate. Did dot (or any makers for that matter) switch to phosphate on mg34’s during the war or is that a sure sign of post war use?

I believe all wartime 34 were blued

Many 42 were finished with a clear phosphate of dubious value.

Thanks for the reply. I know dot switched to phosphate on some small parts on k98 assembly but, unlike most other makers, did not fully switch over.

Update...found an older post that stated these llight grey finish guns are not some sort of clear phosphate but in fact had been sand blasted then coated with a clear preservative awaitng a refinish that never came.

More on the mg42 finish. Wrong thread but it may still reflect on the mg34.

Here is a mg42 gustloff DFB MU at Julia auction they say has factory phosphates receiver and blued parts. If correct this indicates some wartime mg42 were phosphate not blued.
